  I drove one of these ( a ‘53) with a Detroit 6-71 as a hay truck with a 28-foot flat bed over Carson Pass in the Sierra Nevada of California in 1971. Talk about primitive! Tandem rear axles, 5-speed with a 3-speed behind it, no brakes on the front wheels. Going over those mountains at 8,500 feet elevation kept me busy! That engine had a very narrow power band and it took a lot of shifting to keep it happy. But I’ll never forget the sound of that howling 6-71 echoing off the granite walls of Woodfords Canyon, slowly grinding up that long grade toward the summit. Hay trucks pull doubles up that same grade today and with turbocharged engines, they barely slow down now.

  I would bet those older gentleman have forgotten more mechanics than most ppl will ever know. <br>MUCH RESPECT, we as America are gonna miss that generation of men and women, absolutely the backbone of America, American values and its heritage

  If you ever start another GM two stroke, leave the valve cover off, clamp a pair of vice grips on the rack rod and you can control the rack manually if you don&apos;t have a stuck injector. Great video and I love seeing people save old iron!

  Learn what you can from us old guys while you can because we won&apos;t be around forever. &nbsp;Once the knowledge is gone, it&apos;s gone. &nbsp;I wish I would have learned as much as I could have from both Grandfathers while they were still around but I realized I should have way too late.
