I spoke with a Yellowstone National Park backcountry guide a few years ago. He said he is taking more people than ever, but they are staying far fewer days in the backcountry. He said they are in a hurry to get back to civilization so they can post on social media. In other words they're less interested in experiencing things than they are in showing off.

I just spent 3 weeks in Tokyo without a phone . Jumping on and off subway lines , often having days that i got lost , unexpected experiences . People were amazed but then i am 61 and backpacked frequently before the internet existed . Switch the phone off and disconnect . Next year i am planning a 1400km walk , just me , my backpack , a tent and little research ... just walk

"adventure" is an attitude.
you can go to the next town over, phone in-hand, and have a meaningful, life-changing experience. you can go to the most remote place on earth, untethered from technology, and come back the same person you left. what we look for and what we chose to find is up to us.

I watched both Long Way Around and Long Way Down with the love of my life. I lost him late last year after a battle with cancer. I am now sitting finally to watch this series and trying to enjoy it. It is very challenging, but such a well done and joyful series. I wish he were here. In the next month i will be leaving the USA for a time for some much needed slow travel. If only motorcycling were an option. Healing is a long process. Hope everyone is well. Take your moments and embrace life. Nothing is ever certain.

"That run-down barn in the alps where your grandfather once slept in in exchange for a good conversation is now an expensive Airbnb experience. A rare find though. Key is in the lockbox." That was one of the hardest hitting things I've ever heard. Devastating, Tom. Devastating. I also appreciate the little subtle storytelling you put in there of implying that a good chat was all granddad needed to have a roof over his head that night. It implies the local farmer was lonely. It hints at two people who will never see each other again sharing life experiences in a natural, human way. The frontier explored whilst its integrity is still maintained. Now it's just... castrated wilderness. A product to FEEL like you are granddad, even though you know deep down you aren't. This 'road less traveled' has, in fact, been very, very much travelled...

I'm Australian. Back in 1980 when I was 32, my husband (and our beloved little dog) and I rode our bicycles from Paris to Tunisia through Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily. We carried everything we needed on our bicycles; tent, sleeping bags, a few clothes and a cooking stove and pot. We camped out every night under the stars. A beautiful and challenging journey, leisurely riding along tiny roads, up mountains, through forests and meeting beautiful villagers. And our little dog, riding in a basket on my husband's bike, had an glorious adventure. Pure magic! ✨

A friend of mine was the cameraman on those shows. That's him, Jimmy, at 3:00 in. He spent entire weeks of his life on the back of motorcycles, hanging off of trucks, etc. Very good guy with about the most positive attitude of anyone you could meet.

One thing really struck me on a recent flight back from Thailand to Europe. The plane flew over the north of India, with a magnificent view of the Himalayas. Not your ordinary view but a truly extraordinary one, snow tipped peaks, all lined up from Bhutan to Pakistan, the whole string of mountains, something explorers in the past could only have dreamed of.

I was pretty much the only person gaping through the windows. No one seemed remotely interested.

If social media platforms shut down today, i guarantee that 95% of aoncalled travellers and adventure seekers won't be around. Travelling has become more of a flex than a true desire. Most of these people will never remember how they felt at a particular place cos they were busy making content for social media than truly being there in the moment.

I'm an Indonesian, travelling solo through Europe by bicycle in 2017. It should be an easy journey considering the internet has already matured but my phone got bricked at day 2 and all my maps, itinerary and bookings are in that single device. I have to manage everything manually and it forces me to communicate more with people. It's rather refreshing, actually. The device create this invisible bubble between you and the local culture.

Well, there's that old saying about our generation being "too late to explore earth, and too early to explore space" and I think about that a lot.
I remember playing Red Dead Redemption one evening, just sitting around, looking over an entire valley and I couldn't stop thinking "Why did we give all that away? Just to build one more parking lot? Just so some dude can make a couple dollars more?"
