Here is a vignette that most people will be unable or unwilling to believe. In 1976 I was a beer vendor at Philly’s Veterans Stadium. I finished selling around the 7th inning, got cleaned up, and decided to watch the rest of the game in the stands. In the bottom of the 9th with runners on base, Dick Allen hit a ball……. that was caught,……. at the wall in centerfield at the 408 marker. He hit that ball………on a check swing!

A man in Louisville with whom I once worked is the owner of the home movie of the Babe pointing to the dugout, or by legend to the spot he’d shortly hit the homer. He discovered it in his grandfather’s film collection one afternoon. It’s been called “the Zapruder film of sports.”

My Dad played for the St Louis Browns in the minor leagues out of Mcallen TX in the late 40's and I sent away after he died to the HOF and they sent me all his signings and releases, this piece of history gave me a chance to recollect thoughts I have not had in years as I am an older gent myself now. Thanks for the video and the unlocked memories

I looked at Shoeless Joe's defense to see if there is any evidence of (a) unusual errors or (b) failure to give full effort to make outs. On the first count, he made zero errors on 27 chances. On the second point, in the 1920 season he had a "chance" to make an out every 17.7 batters. If he were "dogging" in the outfield we would expect that number to go up in the World Series (if you don't try for a ball, you get no stat, if you try for it you have a "chance"). Instead it went the other way -- Shoeless had a "chance" every 10.4 batters, indicating he was showing above average hustle.

Someone could hit a homerun that hits the Pru but the red seat will still be the "longest homerun hit in Fenway."

In the 1980s, I worked for a division of Doubleday Publishing. They kept the Abner story alive as part of the company’s tradition.

I still don't believe Wade Boggs drank 107 beers in one day. I believe Andre the Giant drank over 100 beers at one sitting...But not Wade Boggs.

Boggs was fairly clear that he wasn't drinking the whole beer. He was just taking a new one regularly.

The earliest reference to the game of baseball was a bylaw enacted in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1791. The bylaw specifically prohibited playing baseball within 80 yards of the town’s meeting house. I’m sure the game was being played by many long before it was organized or rules written down.
