  Female ecletus parrots are red and blue, while males are green. Females fight to the death for tree hollows against homeless females. Dominant females also compete with other dominant females, using color to demonstrate genetic quality and attract males. Since they cannot stray far from their burrows, females depend on males (who are green for camouflage while foraging). However, foraging increases the chance of predation, so males do not feed just any female and are selective. The more vibrant the dominant female, the more males will bring food to her and her chicks. The most colorful females can have up to 7 or more &quot;husbands.&quot;<br><br>In polyandrous birds like cassowaries and jacanas, females are larger or more colorful. They attract males and/or fight other females, mate with males in the area, lay eggs in their nests, and seek new partners. &nbsp;Females attempt to mate with as many males as possible, while only the males incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, or only the males risk bringing food. In both types of polyandry, males have a greater parental investment than females. Since many females fail to reproduce, there is evolutionary pressure favoring larger or more colorful females. Even the spurs of female jacanas are larger and sharper than those of males, to fight other females.<br><br>In the tinamou and emu, only the male incubates, and the females fight among themselves. Instead of being more colorful, they lay colorful eggs so that the male does not abandon the nest for another female. These pigments signal that the female has a very strong immune system, to the point of wasting valuable antioxidants.<br><br>In monogamous birds such as blue macaws, parrots, swans, penguins, crows, and blue jays, males and females are equal in size and color. &nbsp;Since males participate in parental care, they need to choose the best possible female, prioritizing quality over quantity. Because there are no harems or paternal abandonment, almost all males and females find partners, eliminating dimorphic pressure, as both are selective or both are camouflaged. Monogamy can last a few months or forever, and the greater the fidelity, the less the dimorphism.<br><br>In polygynous birds like roosters and peacocks, males tend to be larger or more colorful to ward off rivals or attract females. Females are the only ones who care for the offspring, while males invest in maximizing the number of matings. This generates competition among males and evolutionary pressure only on them.
