80s-90s Lego was special. Going to the store and opening up the front flap to get a peek inside is very nostalgic for me.I went to Europe recently and hit every thrift store/swap meet I could find. I ended up getting so much good stuff I had to ship it home. I prefer the euro boxes because they continued to use that front flap well into the 90s.

I appreciate you putting out your opinions. Please keep them coming.

LEGO realised that targeting AFOLs who have the money is much more lucrative.

The traditional LEGO way is that even if you buy sets, you mix them together, you play with them and over time you build enough inventory that you can build your own creations.

The new AFOL way is to buy a set, build it, put on a shelf and let it gather dust for the rest of its life. Because it's also so valuable, we dare not touch them or mix them with other sets. Because of this approach, we think LEGO is so expensive. It's only expensive because we treat them as single-use display models rather than reusable building blocks.

I like that these days they have many more parts and colours that allow creativity, but it's up to us to put that to use and create something of our own rather than building once and displaying forever.

I totally agree with all of your points. To further support your position, a 100 piece set is a lot more "comprehensible" in the sense that it can inspire creativity and make me want to take it apart, remix it, add to it, etc. because I can comprehend the entire thing. Whereas a 1,000 piece model just feels more like putting a huge puzzle together. It's inconceivable to attempt remixing it, modifying it, or using the pieces in any way other than the prescribed way since it's so complex and huge.

Anyway, thank you for going into detail and sharing your thoughts! And I am always in awe of the amount of work and effort that you put into even your "simplest" videos. I appreciate every detail, especially the time you invest in editing the videos to make them engaging and coherent. As someone who has considered doing more YouTube creation, you are an inspiration.

Growing up in 90's as well I just miss how every theme was unique, different, and creative. Licensed sets are cool but lack creativity imo. I don't like how LEGO has this trend to hide all the studs with tiles or smooth slopes. I love the way old sets look using regular bricks with studs exposed, looks and feels like LEGO, where as newer sets can almost pass for regular plastic molded solid toys

I think snot adds to the detriment of modern lego.

80s and 90s lego has way more charm. That bumpy nature IS or rather was what lego was for decades

I also don't understand why modern Lego needs to brick build everything. The new castle creator set has brick built horses which is insane

Whew! That's a lot of topics you touched on. As an AFOL going back to the 90's I definitely agree with you about instructions being oversimplified these days. I agree there can be a happy medium. I also miss the sturdier boxes sets used to come in. Some had molded trays inside to help you sort your pieces too! The building and rebuilding topic is interesting. Modular bags in sets, while great for cutting down on initial sorting and build time, kind of discourages builders from tearing their sets down because the next time you build it it's going to take a lot longer!

M Tron Magnetizer is one of the many classic space sets that I dream about.

AFOL have a nostalgic feeling about lego and if Lego isn't careful to cultivate that in the youth they risk losing in the future when all that nostalgia dries up.
Similar to Mcdonalds and the move to a more adult vibe with no play places or birthday parties.

I still to this day think about one of my favourite sets as a child in the early 90's, the rocky river retreat - 6552. It had everything!

My favourite theme is the 2006-2008 Batman and I never had any growing up but having started collecting them last year I find that I just love the simplicity and the Lego-ness of them, a lot of modern sets feel like they’re trying really hard to look like models as opposed to lego

I don’t know either way I agree

I'm an AFOL born in the seventies, so I'm from the Classic Lego era, with a greater attachment to the Classic Space theme. I even still have my childhood Alien Moon Stalker (set 6940, from 1986) on my desk. I'm expanding my collection and now own all the Space sets released from 1979 to 1991... and I love them.

I have learned to enjoy the newer sets like the modular buildings or even the new Town Space Exploration sets which have grown on me. And I'm totally in agreement with what you said about Johnny Thunder, I feel the same with those new Space sets... I deeply regret them not making a separate Space theme... or the new great castle sets not being part of a reborn Castle series.

In summary, like you , I love Lego, old and new... but there is nothing like the Classic era of Lego.
