A very good insight into setting up before and operating during a contest. It is surprising what it takes to get things right. <br>I need to shake my butt and get out there again. 73, Gary, G5IGD

Hi Ian, I have only used a push up mast for contesting a couple of times - though in the past I used hydraulic (Clarke) masts fairly extensively in my former professional role in emergency services communications. In exceptionally windy conditions we would pre-set at least the into-wind guy before radically extending the mast, then adjust the length of the guy(s) manually as we extended the mast… Not of course easy to accomplish single-handed, though I have found, you can do it in stages. I also regularly used a 60ft scaffold pole mast for 2m contesting back in the early 1980s / 1990s, with stacked 9 or 17-ele Tonnas, with a 4 x 2 level guying system and manually hauled to the vertical using a falling derrick system (similar to the powered system that Callum the DX Commander uses in his antenna farm - but using a manual block and tackle). Mind you, I was at least 35 years younger then 😊 These days I tend to use a sectional fibreglass pole, which I can erect in 2 metre sections depending on wind conditions (and much smaller antennas). Best 73 Peter GM4RAH.
