Why Our Firewood Dries in One Summer and Yours Takes Two Years (The Norwegian Way)

Dear Lars. We have used self harvested hardwood firewood for many decades here in Downeast Maine for 99% heating with two Jotul EPA wood stoves. I never need a moisture meter to know if my wood is ready. Yes, the M² can give a reading, but why bother since the meters vary. Here's how I know. 1. Your showing end cracks. 2. Banging two splits will sound, not a 'thud'. 3. Splits 'feel' lighter 5. Splits darken. 6. The fresh smell dies in time. We cut split, stack in Spring ( with plenty extra for future years). Last winter we burnt more than in any year ~ 8 cords by May. And we burn softwoods from our woodlot blowdowns in shoulder seasons. There you go. Now tell me: why don;t more people use trees for heating anymore ?

I deal with moisture concerns like this: the wood I cut through this spring and summer (2026) will live for most of a year on pallets in an open pallet sided bin outdoors on the north edge of a field, tarped (top only) during about 6 weeks of leaf fall in late September to early November, open top the rest of the time, until May. Then it will go into one of 2 woodsheds, one open on the sides, one more closed in but well vented, until late fall of 2028. We also take from a plentiful supply of deadstanding softwood on our 20 acres for spring/fall use, storing it in bins for a year, and then in a shed, open on 2 sides, for a year. After 2+ years seasoning and drying, I'm confident it's well below 20%.
