  This is priceless information for &nbsp;novice wood burning. Poison ivy is no joke! It&apos;s extremely dangerous if burned, and all vines should be removed before bucking.<br>Treated, painted, or any wood that has a finish throw it away. Any wood with mold always keep it outside until you put it in the stove. <br>Your most important advice is the metal ash can. 4 days minimum before discarding and never ever put the ashes in your garage cans. I&apos;ve seen garbage trucks catch on fire because of a reckless home owner who dumped ashes in their trash. I&apos;ve been heating with wood for over 50 years, and &nbsp;this video is spot on. Here in Indiana, we don&apos;t have to worry too &nbsp;much about poisonous spiders and snakes, but on rare occasions, they can be present. At 75, I still enjoy processing firewood, and it&apos;s by far my &nbsp;favorite way to heat my home. Yes, it&apos;s a lot of work, but rewards are worth the amazing warmth and comfort for the entire family. <br>It&apos;s my therapy, and I will keep burning and bucking until I am physically unable to do so.   Thank you for your sage insight - &nbsp;Metal bucket a key piece of the safety equation! &nbsp;Been running a wood stove for years- cut my own wood - stacks outside always- gloves yes - got lazy one time <s>moved ash that had been in metal bucket into plastic bin to move out side to ash pile</s> got distracted and put bin onto wooden stool in garage for just 10 min - went out into garage and smelled “fresh fire” &nbsp;the stool tells the story to this day -scorched—-5 more minutes and a house fire was next!! &nbsp; Thank you again ! <br>WesVDW.

  Been heating with wood for close to 40 years and have never had this problem with any of the wood I&apos;ve burned.

  I am in, Canada. Thanks for the information. We don&apos;t have recluse spiders where we live and black widows are rare. We don&apos;t have poison ivy where I am at nor I have I seen it but now I know what to look for if ever I come across it. The one point that hit home for us was we have a 3 gallon metal bucket for ashes. We have emptied the stove into bucket and left it beside wood stove on the ceramic tile base. One winter night (about -20) we has the CO detector go off. It was windy and I figure maybe the wind was blowing draft back down causing gas to enter house. Opened some windows, turned on some fans for a while and vented small house, mostly open concept like a cabin but bedrooms have doors, but at night are left open to get heated. It worked, was able to go back to sleep. Then it happened again, did same procedure and it just happened to be on a windy winter night so I attributed it to the same issue as the first. Then the following winter it happened again, I was wakened by the CO detector, went out of the bedroom into the living area with lights off and before I turned on the light out of the corner of my eye I seen a little ember. My wife had emptied the ashes in bucket before starting a fire and didn&apos;t realize there was small and few live coals, enough to set off the smoke detector. I put the bucket outside on a patio stone, opened the windows and ran a fan to exhaust inside air. CO detector off was able to go back to bet. No longer is the ash bucket inside if there is ashes in it. Praise God it never turned into a more serious issue such as death. Lesson learned. We do have the odd piece of firewood that has a bit of the white fungus on it but it usually makes it into the stove first and we only ever keep a 2 day supply of firewood inside as we have a 1 Cord woodpile close to house while the main storage is about 100ft away.<br><br>Thanks brother for this information, valuable for anyone who burns wood......blessings🙏

  Mr. Sawyer speaks truth. Decades ago on a cold winter day way up on the side of a hill, I was helping my dad burn brush piles where we&apos;d cleared a new cow pasture. To try to keep warm, I stood up hill above the burning pile to catch some of the warmth from the fire. I caught more than the heat: worst case of poison ivy I ever had. <br> &nbsp; In addition to the chainsaw slinging poison ivy juice, you can get a good dose of it from using a weed whacker to mow along a fence line or around the trees in an orchard. Always wear long pants and then remove them with care after you&apos;re done.

  These are great tips. On a related note: about 5 years ago I was cleaning out my garden without gloves. I was bit by a spider or some other nasty insect. My hand turned red around the bite and my hand swelled and I had to make a trip to the doctor. I never do this chore anymore without gloves - you never know what might be hiding in the weeds and garden plants.

  I have an outside boiler, screen the ash into a 55 gallon drum, 3 weeks later I went to remove the ashes from the drum and you could see sparks in the ashes.<br><br>As for poison ivy, one of the worse cases I ever got was driving through smoke of a prescribed road ditch fire, 3 hours later my arms and face were blistered and required a trip to the ER, was no fun

  It was nice to have this mentioned again. &nbsp;My grandfather taught us this stuff as kids, all but the stick to check the bottom rows of the stack. The gloves were on the fireplace poker. If we left the house without them to get wood, lol our butts would be on fire. We only forgot one time!!!

  My property is covered in poison ivy around the fence lines and wooded areas, my son and his puppy were bitten by a recluse playing on the ground by a shed- I have no doubts on any of it and hope this gets shared to anyone that needs it.
