My great grandma had a wood heater. She put a few sweet potatoes in the ash box and the sweet potato slowly cooked all day. She would take it out and wash it and peel it for supper.

Have you ever had roasted garlic? It's sweet as h*ll. And it's not because it's cooked with sugar! Japanese sweet potatoes cooked in foil in the oven are an awesome healthy dessert. I wrap them in wet newspaper, and then in foil and slowly bake them, and they turn out soft and creamy and super sweet.
