How Oceangate's Titan Ignored 60 Years of Solid Engineering

I actually learned about Ocean Gate’s CEO a few years before the implosion. He was on a news interview where he was complaining about excessive safety factors and “unnecessary” double and triple checks and redundancies. He proudly boasted about not having those things and forcing a new frontier in exploration. I very clearly remember myself uttering “well he’s not long for this world” after all the crap he said. Sadly what I didn’t know is that he would take innocent lives with him. So sad and entirely avoidable as most accidents like this seem to be.

honestly the fact they called them "mission specialists" instead of "passengers" to skirt around a law, should tell you everything you need to know.

Now I'm not a betting man, but I'd wager whoever first said "you're remembered for the rules you break" was not referring to disregarding the basic rules of physics

"Why is Alvin still in service, and Oceangate imploded?"

Uhh...because Alvin was built by engineers instead of billionaire tech bros?

A video about Oceangate that is actually about Alvin? This is like reverse-clickbait. I love it!

When a company name ends with the word 'gate,' the universal suffix for 'scandal,' you know there's something afoot.

On my very first day of flight school, my instructor gave me one very important piece of advice that I have carried with me everywhere I went from that time on.
"Never let the other guy kill you."

3:05 OceanGate calling their passengers “mission specialists” to skirt the law and then our wonderful narrator calling them “passengers” again right after made me smirk

I watched the Netflix documentary on this today. They actually recorded the sound of the carbon fiber threads failing. Stockman referred to it as the "seasoning of the hull." They built a model of the Titan and tested it—it failed well before reaching the depth required to get to the Titanic. They ignored that result and went ahead with building the sub anyway.

They also left the sub in subzero weather without testing how the structure would be affected by freezing conditions. Clearly, Stockman had never heard about the O-rings on the Challenger.

Hearing the sound of the carbon fiber threads failing was terrifying. I really enjoyed watching this documentary at work....... I was learning about… "poor safety workplace culture." Yes, that why i was watching full length Netflix docs at work.

The contrast between Alvin and Titan makes me think of what Richard Feynman said regarding the Challenger disaster: “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.”

I feel bad for David Lochridge. He did everything he could to prevent this yet his concerns were dismissed. I'm glad we finally got to hear the recording of his dismissal from OceanGate

"Safety rules are written in blood. Failure to follow them and they'll be written in yours."
So sadly true

I do actually agree with a stress on correct operational procedures, however they ignored that in its crucial aspect tests and internal testing ignorance.
