  It&apos;s unfair to name Paulus as the one most responsible for &apos;losing&apos; Stalingrad. If there&apos;s one with the most responsibility of losing it it&apos;s Hitler.

  I remember him being brought out at Nuremburg being referred to as the ghost of Stalingrad coming to haunt the defendants. Its interesting to learn more

  Paulus was put in absolutely impossible situation. He did the right thing by surrendering. Sure, of the 91,000 soldiers that surrendered, only 6,000 survived their capture. But that had to be expected; The Germans basically destroyed a major portion of the country of Russia. And the Russians were out for revenge.<br><br>It was a no-win situation for Paulus, and people like Goering didn&apos;t help the situation by making promises they couldn&apos;t fulfill.<br><br>I feel terrible for Paulus and the entire 6th Army. Sure, they were no saints. But at the same time, their superiors were basically using them as cannon fodder.

  I&apos;m always completely in awe of the truly staggering figures in terms of the size of the armies, casualties and prisoners taken.

  The moral of WWII- never NEVER fight a war ideologically. &nbsp; Your opponents want to win too.

  What people need to realize, is that Paulus was a staff officer through and through, not a frontline officer. Until he was given command of the 6th army, he hadn&apos;t commanded a single soldier in battle. But after the death of his boss, von Reichenau, suddenly he was put in charge of a quarter of a million men.

  My grandad fought in Stalingrad and survived Soviet captivity. &nbsp;He was a devoted Catholic man and the best grandpappy one could ever ask for. &nbsp;He never had not one kind word about Paulus. &nbsp;He was a coward, traitor, and a loser. &nbsp;My grandpappy was an honorable man and soldier and NEVER did he or any men under his command commit any war crimes. &nbsp;Anyonenunder hisncommand guilty of such was subject to firing squad. &nbsp;My grandpappy&apos;s stories could bring the toughest of men to tears. &nbsp;I loved him and miss him dearly.

  Paulus met himself in a situation which had not been fathomed by his Nazi leader and there over confidence came with a greater loss than thought...
