  Did Griffin have his car keys in his pocket? Maybe he lost his keys, forcing him to turn around and search for it, causing him to get lost in the dark

  I live right by the Olympic national Forest and I always tell my daughter (15) do not go walking in the woods at all, ever, for ANY REASON by yourself.

  James really bothers me. I was acquainted with him thru my old job when I lived in PA. He was a kind man. I&apos;m not sure what could have happened? He knew that place. He was not only &apos;&apos;retired&quot;, he was disabled. He went to the hot springs to help with pain. For the life of me I can&apos;t imagine him running anywhere or climbing anything :/ &nbsp;Rest in peace. I hope we find out one day what happened.<br>(there were witnesses who seen him that day, but I didn&apos;t see them included here).

  I have hiked hundreds of trails solo across the United States. The only time I ever got unnerved and turned around was on the Sol Duc trail trail in Olympic National Park. <br>Never understood why. I didn&apos;t hear or see anything. Just a VERY strong gut feeling that I have never gotten anywhere else. I&apos;m glad I listened to it.

  In the second case, I think there is a reason for James Griffin to walk up to higher elevation. If he got lost in the dark, he could have thought that by going up he would reach some place with good visibility into distance, and head in the direction of any lights he would see.

  I work with a group called the Olympic Project. We are not a search and rescue organization, but we do on occasion look for and help in the search of missing individuals. We spent months searching for Jacob Gray, and our property was utilized for the search crews base camp. A few of the Olympic Project members got to know Jacob’s father Randy Gray, really well, and we were all very heartbroken for the family (and still are). What I have never understood, is how Jacob made it all the way up to Hoh Lake area at that time of year? At that elevation, the snow levels would have made it near impossible to traverse, especially without the right mountaineering gear. I’m not saying that it is absolutely impossible, just hard to fathom. I suppose Jacob could have slowly made his way up there over a period of time, and moved higher as the snow melted. I guess we will never know. God rest his soul, and my thoughts are always with his family.

  Rule #1- dont leave the trail. #2- if you do, mark your path as you go along so you dont get lost. #3- be prepared for everything. I have made all those mistakes and learned to follow them the hard way.

  A hiker might climb in the dark for strategic, safety, and aesthetic reasons. This is a common practice in mountaineering, often referred to as an &quot;alpine start&quot; or &quot;summit push,&quot; which involves beginning the ascent in the early hours of the morning or middle of the night.
