Used steel wool on radiator holes in an apartment and it worked fine 30 years ago. Just heard theyre back.

Those thicker stainless steel scrubbers are good too, very sharp. If they try to chew through them they bleed to death.

Don’t use steel wool near wires as it causes electrical fires and faults! Otherwise totally fine

You could also cut a small piece of wire mesh and staple it in place, over the the stuff you put in there. Just as an added precaution.

I would also mix some D-Con mouse poison in with the steel wool and caulk. That would add another deterrent to the little devils.

You can also use "white cement", with or without sand mix, which would be cleaner when set.

Mortar is what I use. Take some type-s or type-m mortar and mix it up nice and thick, then take your steel-wool and work it into the mortar until it is fully saturated in the steel-wool, then jam it into the hole/crack/opening and cover it up with some more mortar.
