What Happened to Star Fox?

Miyamoto has also said that He didn't really want the on Rails style to be all starfox was known for. He did say that he had been planning for Starfox to actually have an action adventure land based game even before Adventures but before he really got it going he discovered Dinosaur planet....and well we all know how that went.

5:04 There’s more to this story - at the same time of Dinosaur Planet’s development, Star Fox creator Takaya Imamura (who was basically the series’ sheperd during his time at Nintendo) was working on a Star Fox sequel that had you out of the Arwing and adventure on foot (per the request of Miyamoto), but much of the SF64 team had went to work on Mario and Zelda projects and Imamura’s game stalled.

Shortly before E3 2000 (where DP was first demoed), Nintendo asked Rare if they wanted to merge their idea with their current Star Fox project, and they wholly obliged; nothing was forced on them. Some see it as a bad move, but Adventures sold nearly 2 million units, which is more than can be said for everything else that followed.

13:46 Another common misconception, but it’s actually owned three ways by Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc.

Don’t mean to step on your toes, but having the full story helps add context to a lot of decisions made in game development. Still a great video you put together - kept my attention the whole way through. Keep it up!

An interesting thing to find out about the new Star Fox game is who the Producer is on Nintendo's side, and I think I might have an idea on who it is: Hiroshi Matsunaga, as they could be the next person in the company who will champion the series.

The reason why I believe it's Hiroshi Matsunaga is that he was Assistant Producer on Star Fox Zero, meaning he already has a pretty high-up leadership role in the series, but also was a Producer on Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, meaning he has a working relationship with Velan Studios already. I suspect this remake with Velan Studios fills a similar purpose as MercurySteam's Metroid: Samus Returns remake, MAGES' Famicom Detective Club remakes, and Grezzo's Link's Awakening remake, where the studio is initially 'trained' with a remake before then creating a wholly original game building off elements introduced in the remake (Metroid: Samus Returns -> Metroid Dread, Famicom Detective Club duology -> Emio: The Smiling Man, Link's Awakening -> Echoes of Wisdom). This would mean Velan Studios, while being led by Hiroshi Matsunaga in the Producer's seat on the Nintendo side, would follow up this remake with a new game while taking elements introduced in the remake (greater focus on telling the story through cinematics, etc.)

I've always felt like a combination of gameplay elements from Adventures and Assault alongside vehicle dogfights in all range mode could help do more for the series. Obviously the Arwing, Landmaster and Blue-Marine wouldn't be going anywhere. But ask yourself one question. What more can Star Fox do on-rails and in vehicles that it hasn't already achieved? Plus, wouldn't it be nice to see Fox using his moves from the Super Smash Bros series in his own games, or playing as other characters with moves of their own? (Falco, Krystal, Slippy, Fay Miyu, etc.) Star Fox deserves having the chance to evolve again! If it's going do that, it needs to genuinely go off the rails.

Nothing, nothing happened to Star Fox, and that's the problem. Star Fox is exactly where it was in 1997, just in higher definition.

It's crazy to me that the only home consoles this series has missed is the Wii & Switch 1

It has a release on almost every console, but it's been frozen in time and not seen any live by it's developers.

That's insane to me.

24:49 the original developer of Star Fox 64 said when he was making the original game this was the graphics that he envisioned. Starfox has always had a vision of realism. The shift to cartoony was a course correction because Nintendo had moved away from graphics now that switch 2 has the power to make more realistic graphics they decided to honor the original vision for the series

24:27 thank you! I know we were all blown away by the Galaxy movie perfecting the GameCube era design, but we need to remember that before this new resurgence we’ve had 20 years of stiff funkopop bobblehead Fox before getting 2 totally different versions of peak! I’ve always preferred the creativity of character designs that lean more into that awakened animal approach instead of human with snout but more hairy, and it makes the world feel just a bit more alien and sci fi.

Panzer Dragoon has forever replaced Star Fox in my heart as the kind of on-rails shooting games.

I’m sensing a pattern here… Q-Games, Platinum Games, and Velan Studios.

They all chose to make Star Fox 64 again, rather then making an actual sequel to Star Fox. Could this mean, Nintendo isn’t solely blame, for the endless Star Fox remakes? Nah, that’s poposterous.

Those SFX chip graphics were MIND blowing when they came out don’t kid yourself. True 3d was something we only dreamed of back in the 16 bit era
