  Machine designer here. This is an excellent and comprehensive introduction to washers. They play a critical role in threaded connections. I specified the Nord-Lock serrated washers about ten years ago for the exhaust ducting on a huge diesel turbocharger. In most of my design applications these days I specify ASTM F436 hardened washers that are used with high strength bolts.
