Breaking generational trauma is so hard especially if it’s not just within the nuclear family; but the whole society/culture? That’s hard, seeing young people go this route is never easy.

Just because Korea has been through a lot it doesn't excuse it's behavior towards others. The lack of empathy, superiority complex, cancel culture, putting value in material things above your fellow human beings, bullying, misogyny, xenophobia, the lack of not able to forgive, and the push for money and status its something that needs to change. The expectation to be perfect is so unrealistic and flawed. The lack of giving people 2nd chances to redeem themselves and to grow from it is so almost nonexistent in Korea from what I have seen. No room for personal growth.

I encourage you to continue to speak about it and not be discouraged. You can break that cycle, it isn't easy but it starts with 1. I wished more entertainers and respected people would speak more openly about this.

The extreme jealousy and bulling have been in Korea for decades, but I am happy that it is being finally talked on international level. Hopefully the pressure from outside will push towards a positive shift in the society...

Im not excusing her DUI but the fact that SK has such a STRONG drinking culture then turn around like they are perfect beings is insane.

I feel society is losing empathy for one another. It’s really sad the lack of empathy I’ve seen from ppl in comment sections and Reddit about her death or even the TOP situation

Last time I was this fucked up is when Moonbin passed, it was so sudden and it just showed how helpless you are in the lives of people you know publicly

Her death this week underscores another victim of the brutal k-net culture. After she was kicked off "bloodhounds", I feared it was over for her. She was a child actress who was brilliant and her family's main provider. When she got drunk and crashed her car, the shaming never stopped. Rather than trying to make her go through rehab, show contrition and let her return she was crucified. There was no return. It was brutal. S.Ko's drinking culture doesn't help. Celebrities are just isolated, treated as pets, not human.

You don't have to be perfect for people to love you. Everyone is flawed. If you disagree, you are not being honest with yourself. Life is NOT a competition, it's a journey. That's what I would like to say to Korean people and people in general.

Thank you for speaking so honestly and sharing your thoughts. I’ve been living in Korea for about seven years now with my Korean husband and we’ve talked several times about the suicide rate here, and the social/ cultural problems as you discussed. And although mental health services are getting better, there is still a stigma and serious lack of understanding. There’s not a lot of empathy from the general public or from work places and educational institutions which are usually the source of enormous stress for so many people. I’ve seen first hand teachers dismiss kids as being weak minded if they’re shy, scared, or not performing to the teacher’s standard. I hope these topics are discussed more! I really think that change is coming with your generation and the next to follow.

As a Korean living in Korea, forgiving someone is the hardest thing for Koreans to do. Everyone seems to be waiting for someone else to make a mistake.
Korean culture is toxic. Coming across someone's suicidal is not that special in Korea.
As a Korean, i also hope that other Koreans can realize this, but i think it needs a whole century.
