Belgrade, Serbia | BEST Place to RETIRE in Eastern EUROPE?

Hello, dear and good people. Serbia is geographically in south-eastern Europe, while the north part of it is in central Europe. Eastern Europe are countries like Russia, Belarus, Ukraine... Love the introduction. Raw and real. That's the best description of Belgrade I've read in a long time... Many commenters will criticize you for the wrong map of Serbia. For Serbs, Kosovo is part of Serbia, and this is a very sensitive topic here, so maybe you should have left out the map or shown it with Kosovo (or at least with a dotted line), but not fully removed... You could have taken the bus 72 from the airport to the wider city center for free. That shuttle A1 is not free as it is considered a "special line". How exactly does free public transportation reduce traffic and pollution? People who drive will always drive, no matter what. This was just a political decision to gain some points... Kudos for taking the effort to pronounce the local names reasonably well... Cevapi is "chevapi" and Dorcol is "Dorchol". Even though some buildings may look gritty, we have no "dangerous areas". Just because there are graffiti or dilapidated buildings, it doesn't make it dangerous, as we have no gangs... Thanks for mentioning the protests. They have been mostly peaceful, but since June 28 there was more violence. My advice is to stay away from them, because you never know how they will go... This is a local issue between the Govt. and the people, and should not have an impact on foreign visitors, but just be aware and alert. Glad you saw the crypt of the Temple, many foreigners miss that... We are not cold, we are warm, but we've just been having a tough life and we are tired... Austria-Hungary collapsed in 1918, and that's when Zemun became part of Serbia, but since 1934 it has been incorporated into Belgrade; today it's 1 of 17 municipalities of Belgrade... The "Ketchup Bottle" building, haha. We also call it the "USB stick" building or the "Microphone" building... As for the smoking part, there are non-smoking places, although not as many as smoking ones, and in the summer you can always sit outdoors. Also, shopping malls are smoke-free areas... The winters are getting warmer over the years, we now don't even have snowfall in Belgrade anymore, or have very little, so the winters are definitely not as harsh as you say... You will never find an ideal place anywhere. But, from what I could conclude, you loved visiting Belgrade but you will not retire here. And that's fine. I apologize for a long comment. Thank you for a very nice video, I enjoyed it.

What a fascinating city! That church is absolutely stunning, the markets were impressive, and the parks were beautiful (and surprising - I never expected to see so much green in Belgrade). Loved seeing the walkable neighborhoods and the sidewalk café culture. Definitely seems like a nice place to visit. Great video (and I actually believe you were there)! :)

The cost of living in Belgrade was at least 50% less before Corona and inflation hit, it was very affordable back than.

I grew up in Serbia now living in US.
I grew up in a village and farm work is not strange to me.
For those in the West:
If you like a country life ,opppse to city life Serbija is a perfect place for you. A small house with a large space of land costs from five thousand plus.
The higher price the more you get.
Idealistic life with four seasons, beautiful landscappe, friendly neighbors.
You get a dream which you cant afford in the West !!!

I'm a non smoker, I find the smoke unpleasant, but don't find the smoke problem so grave. Actually, only in winter and only in cafes and restaurants of all indoor spaces. Everywhere else is completely smoke-free: all public transport, all shops and malls, hospitals, theatres, schools, incl. of all the staff in them.
Lots of restaurants and cafes have open-space parts where you are spared from smoke most of the time. Only the winter could be critical for a few inconsistent months. There are more and more restaurants that are smoke free all the year round by their own choice.

Hi all, Zdravo! I'm a Brit and moved here at the end of 2021 with my Serbian wife after a period living in Spain and completely love Serbia, it's culture, history, food (I'm a bit of a bugger for the šliva - plum liquor) and people. For sure it has its issues, but so does everywhere (including my country of origin). We have recently completed a house build in the village of Vrčin which is about 20km outside Belgrade. It is certain that Belgrade is really happening. We also see the spill-over of that out where we are, where there is a considerable amount of residential construction and modernisation taking place. Our neighbours are absolute angels - friendly, helpful and hospitable and fully accepting of me as a foreigner with a very poor grasp of the language beyond a few rudiments. I am very happy here and thoroughly recommend it. I don't do as much fishing as I'd like, but that's on me...
