You can hear in his voice the pain of Jesus.

Nothing against Ted Neeley or any of the other fine performers who have sung the part of Jesus, but Ian set the bar so high that no one else has come close.

Everyone else is “Listen to me sing.” Ian is, “Listen to my story.” There is no better. Raw emotion, pain, fear, and doubt.

Ian’s is the most moving of the many fine performances I’ve heard over the decades. He did it first, and for myself and many it is still unrivaled as the best. ❤

Fun fact : Tim Rice, asked him to perform the part of Jesus on the original 1970 album recording of Jesus Christ Superstar after hearing his performance on "Child in Time". He recorded his entire performance in three hours. He was offered the lead role in the 1973 film adaptation but he declined because it would conflict with a scheduled tour with Deep Purple.

Jesus Christ Superstar wasn't a musical. It's a Rock Opera. The difference you hear and feel in this recording and recent performances. A musical performances is smoother. This one is raw. Raw feelings.

Gillan had the best male voice in rock history. Just amazing control, emotion, power... and the screams. Unbelievable.
