We went on our first cruise in 2003 and made every mistake you're talking about. The biggest thing we learned: since we don't take excursions and don't really leave the ship, the ship is our destination. On port days we're in a swimsuit and a t-shirt, and a polo gets worn twice — like you said, no one notices.
