Always great seeing Jonathan Ferguson the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK - which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.

Oh my god! This is Jonathan Ferguson the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK - which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history!

Anyway...i just wanted to comment to say how absolutely insane my year 10 history teacher was when he explicitly told us that ball shot did absolutely no damage and most of the time wouldn't even hit a target...

During the gel block demonstration with the Vickers, I love the two different facial reactions. Dan is horrified whereas Jonathan is pretty much just "oh yeah, that's what it does."

The fact that the Maxim is still being used by armies today speaks volumes about how reliable it is.. I believe that Ukraine has some for instance.

The crazy thing about the Vickers was, that you could basically fire them forever as long as you had spare barrels, the ammo and water for cooling.

There is an anecdote that when the British were getting rid of their Vickers in the 70s (I think), they had huge stockpiles of ammo for them that fit no other gun in their arsenal. So what they did was, they serviced a Vickers so that it was basically factory new, took a ton of spare barrels and over the course of a week put like 5 million rounds through it and afterwards it was still well within tolerances in terms of wear.
