I feel that in my experience, the protein intake needed for recovery is higher. However, once the body has fully recovered, the protein requirement decreases for maintenance. For example, when you no longer feel soreness or pain in your body, it seems like the body requires less protein and nutrients. Therefore, we should consider the recovery factor when determining our body's needs. For instance, if I take a week off from the gym, I may not need as much protein and nutrients intake. In my opinion, our protein requirements decrease once the body has fully recovered. From a health perspective, I support this idea because it reduces the protein load on the body and promotes overall health.

I know some people get scared about this topic, thinking that they're losing muscle mass if they lower their protein intake, but in reality, that won't happen that easily. Our body is designed to preserve muscle tissues as much as possible before starting to break them down because the body knows that muscle tissue is precious and hard to gain. So, it spares the muscles as a last resort. I hope people wake up and start to take things more easily and relaxed. The most significant factor for muscle mass is training. Muscles grow and maintain once they're trained regularly. Even if the diet is low in protein, the body will try its best to maintain the muscle tissue for you.

Regarding to your "Protein Intake Calculator", it does not support metric units.

All current studies suggest basing protein intake off LBM for pretty much everyone. 1-1.2g/lb LBM = good to go. I'm at 150. Don't know how I ever managed 220/day, those were hard days a decade ago lol.

This is fantastic. Well done! I did this too and tracked everything for 4 months in 2024. I was eating about 150 gr of protein a day in a deficit to lose weight; packed the rest of my macro split with carbs, around 60%. I went from 252 lb to 234 lb. Didnt lose any strength in my lifts and in fact went up on some lifts and my muscles looked more defined and full. It was a fun experiment.

As someone new to tracking these sorts of things, where can i find information on choosing a target to begin with? For example, you chose 25% of calories. Maybe it was a random number, but more likely there was some thought behind choosing that.

You could probably cut this to 100 grams a day, that would still be almost double the WHO recommended 0.8g/kg for your weight. Far too many people think they will lose muscle, this does not happen on any normal diet. Muscle wasting requires severe malnutrition. Even in vegans who go out their way to avoid meat and dairy, muscle wasting is not seen. Vegans have shortages in B12 and serum iron, but they don't suffer from shortages in protein.
