All your brother is doing is running up lawyer fees he'll probably want your parents to pay for him

These stories are contrived, but real enough to be infomercials about old people managing their lives and estates.

I've known at least three Derek's in my life and every one of them was a total asshole

Hmm. The title of this story says she never told her family that she inherited the Lake house. Yet apparently they all knew at the will reading. Derek was particularly unhappy about it.

How could this happen that the family did not know about the inheritance? Assuming that there was a will, there must have been a reading of it with family. The exception would be if rest of family was not named in Will and not invited to reading of it.

Why do all these people either buy or are left a “secret” house and the next day the family shows up with a lawyer to take it away? How did they find out if it was a secret?

This is why you put a clause in your will if you contest the will and lose you then recieve nothing.
