That smoke right by the intake manifold is almost certainly a vacuum leak. A split hose, a cracked intake manifold gasket, or a blown brake booster diaphragm, one of those lets air in past the seal and vacuum collapses the second you crack the throttle.

Sounds like your engine is A. Off timing on the distributor and B. Running with a dirty carb. Fixing those will probably fix some of your issues not caused by the vacuum diaphragm not working the slide (which im gonna be honest id just use some rtv gasket sealer on the edges to seal that up for test drive purposes). Make sure to clean out every oriface and jet on the carb with carb cleaner. Do NOT however get any on the diaphragm or it will shrivel and not fit correctly. I have done that on multiple motorcycles and it sucks to repair every time. Then once you get the engine running smoothly, use a timing light and check the timing marks on the block with the timing marks on the flywheel to make sure the timing is correct. If it isnt, loosen the cap on the distributor and while using the timing light, turn it while the engine is running until you see the marks line up for factory spec. That will help with the engine vibration. Also check for air leaks. Thats a huge issue on my amc hornet which im currently working on.

That's genius buying a car with no floor. Just chuck the drive train and Fred Flintstone it.

Hi Alec, the engine will be a relatively easy fix one way or the other, right now it has a really bad misfire amongst other things. Sounds like too much choke, plus the misfire is not going to help at all. Looking at the floor and what you are in for structurally the engine is going to be the least of your worries. Good luck with the restoration.

I still believe the timing is off. Loosen the distributor clamp and try turning the distributor while cranking it, try in either direction, and where the engine starts you'll at least be close. Then, do your valve adjustments, set the timing to 13 degrees BTDC, and then tune your carb.

Something I'd recommend, if you're willing, is getting a set of HIF4's or HS4's. The swap is overall worth it in my experience with me doing it on my 77 b. Awesome seeing another B owner like me! I might have some parts if you'd be interested.

A quick test for misfire, which you definitely have, is to remove each spark plug wire one at a time, hold the end of the wire close to the plug while the engine is running. And check to be sure you have spark jumping to the plug from the wire. (Dont hold the metal end of the wire!) Use the insulated wire.

Have you checked that the fuel is reaching the engine properly ? Not just for starting, but also at the throttle for acceleration ? 👌This little MG is nice.

Wishing you success in this endeavour. We need more classics on the road to break up the monotony of the current lunch boxes on wheels.
