  I'm an 80 year old Arizona native and love desert exploring in my Wrangler.  I know it isn't your goal to prospect but I'll bet there are times when you wish you had a metal detector with you. In the late 70's I followed a walking trail from an old homestead site to the site and remains of the old ill-fated dam site on the Hassayampa River North of Wickenburg. I found two unfired 45-90 cartridges in about 6 inches of hard packed dirt near the river.  I left the old home site alone and only took photos. It belongs to the Cooper family who still occupies this land.(as far as I know)   Four generations that I know of.  The elder Mr. Cooper gave me permission to look around at all the relics. I worked with his grandson on the Phoenix fire Department (1967-1990). You go to places I haven't seen in decades or maybe even never seen.  Keep up this great work as long as you can.

  Dad's artillery units trained out there in 42'-43', 172nd & 941st Field Artillery Battalions out from Camp Iron Mountain.  They were an activated Army National Guard Unit from New Hampshire that served in N. Africa, D-Day landings, Hurtgen Forest, the Ardennes Battle of the Bulge & then into Germany itself.

  My ex-father-in-law was a &quot;Rino&quot; and said that his tank was one that had the lamps. He told me that they were experimenting with putting different color lenses in front with the idea that by constantly switching colors, it would cause someone&apos;s pupils to open and close, blinding them and causing intense headaches. They thought they could create cones of darkness that they could essentially hide large numbers of soldiers in and you wouldn&apos;t even know they were there until you could &quot;reach out and touch them&quot; (as he described it).<br>His picture and some of his medals are now in the Patton museum. There was a book written about his company and he will be remembered because &quot;Sergeant Thompson and his crew got lost in the desert for 3 days&quot;.

  The rocks you saw were for the 736th--my Dad was there and part of the unit. &nbsp;8 Ball was their battalion mascot. &nbsp;They were really upset when he was shot.

  Ranchers leave those tires out there to put salt licks in for cattle. They put them in tires so the cattle don&apos;t break them up. Also, the rocks around the cactus were painted white so that troops didn&apos;t walk into a cactus at night, the same with the rocks on the pathways.
