A quick note about our testing setup, since we’ve seen this question come up a lot:
All of the windows were only a few feet apart. That means they all had identical conditions: same sun exposure, same indoor temperature, same outdoor temperature, and the same wind exposure (and it wasn’t windy during the test). No heat registers were blowing on any of them.

We also measured each window within about two minutes during every round so nothing had time to change between readings. This isn’t a scientific study, but it is a fair, real-world comparison under equal conditions to show how the different materials perform relative to each other.
Thanks for watching and for all the great comments and questions!

I love it that the blanket turned out to be the best solution. That's what my grandparents did and what my mom did when we were kids.

I have a cat. I can picture it now, being woken up at 3am with a popping sound, disoriented, only to investigate and find out my cat is popping the bubble wrap trying to get to the window to see out. 😂🐾

I had an old house. I used vinyl shower curtains because you could see through them and they are thicker than the plastic.

Being a quilter, I think it's worth making blanket curtains for the windows in winter. Thanks for the testing.

I put grommets in blankets to cover my windows in winter. I'm going to add bubble wrap and cardboard, now.

In college we made 'thermal curtains' by sandwiching a space/survival mylar blanket between mattress pads and then some fabric to 'make it look nice.' We didn't measure the temperatures, we just made these things because that's what the professor told us to make.

We lose heat through a ceiling sunlight window on cold days & nights. It’s low enough that I can stand on a step stool and push a couple of large pillows into it (a broomstick helps). The pillows stay in place because they’re lightweight and a tight fit in the window. The room is warmer, quieter, and cozy. It’s good to have things in place before we need them, as much as we can. Thank you for this helpful and timely video! 🙏

The blanket and the cardboard block light. Bubble wrap is the winner in my eyes.

Harbor Freight, 4'x6' moving blanket, $8, push pins or screws in the wall above the window. Use large paper/binder clamps on the screws, clip in the blanket.
Cats can slip up under the blanket, get on the window sill.

I used bubble wrap in my travel trailer so I still had daylight in there.
