What HDG gives you is the benefit of all the great things about traditional Medicare (no networks, no pre-approvals, no annual changes outside of Part D, coverage that travels with you, 100 versus 20 days of skilled nursing care) and none of the drawbacks of an expensive supplement that doubles every 4 to 7 years. This allows you avoid Advantage which is now turning to the HMO model and you will be fine with while you're healthy but you will be cursing it if you get cancer and you're not allowed to go to see certain oncologists or go to certain hospitals. Part D is a legitimate concern along with having to deal with dental and vision but there are trade-offs with everything.

We love our HDG plan. Less than $50 a month. We put the $200 a month savings from regular G plan costs in a Brokerage Account for future Deductables. We average less than $400 a year out of pocket. Remember it's actually a MOOP, Medicare reduces the amount and then pays 80%. Advantage Plans are great until you get Sick. Ask those working in Healthcare, if they would get an Advantage Plan for themselves or family members. We see the difference.....

Don't forget dental costs on Plan G High Deductible.

I'm in rural MN. Moop for advantage plans with no additional premium in my area is $6995 if you stay in network. If you go out of network its over $10,000. For an additional premium of $60 month on advantage plan you can have a moop for $4995 if you stay in network.

I'm more concerned about my medical costs when I'm 75 or 85 than when I'm 65. This pushes me to GHD

Where I live MA plan MOOPs are quite high with most plans in the $8K+ range. Also the major hospital system in my region has pulled out of almost all MA plans. So if you live here MA is actually a bad idea. However, from my erspective the deciding factor is your health. I have a chronic condition that impacts my immune system. Consequently I have two significant autoimmune conditions. Because of that I see a lot of doctors and get a lot of medical treatments in a typical year. Consequently, I would hit the MOOP for any MA plan available to me and I would be way over the deductible for any high deductible supplement. I am fortunate to have an F supplement and a $0 premium drug plan. So I pay nothing beyond my premiums, which come to a bit over $5K per year. That is well under what I would pay with any other plan because, for some reason the premium for my F supplement is less than that for a G supplement. SHould that change, I will switch to a G plan which I am allowed to do where I live.

‘Advantage’ is only to the insurance company

High Deductible G has Medicare pay 80% of the "Medicare approved" amount for that service, which is dramatically below standard billing cost. That is what you must pay out of pocket. I'll estimate you need $13,000+ in "medicare approved" costs to reach that max out of pocket figure for that year. A wellness checkout by your doctor is free for HDG. If you have a HSA you can use those dollars to pay for any out of pocket costs with those dollars. You cannot use HSA dollars to pay for any supplement premiums for either G plans. If you die with money in your HSA it is not good to your heirs compared to other inherited accounts. Add to that the average increases in plan G costs compared to HDG. The main thing is agents get paid by the premium you start out with so it is not in their best interest to push the HDG.

You cannot see the future, but if you are healthy it is a very solid plan to go with a HDG if you have an HSA to cover several years of max dollars for out of pocket expenses.
