I do prefer machines over barbell movements but machines are really annoying when it comes to tracking because every company has different resistance profiles. At least for a barbell you can go to any gym and it will always be the same.

These movements are fun to do and make the gym feel more like a hobby and less like a grind. As someone not doing strength or bodybuilding competitions, trying to optimize hypertrophy is a lower priority than staying motivated to keep training.

I gravitate toward barbells over machines because in my gym the machines are always taken and have lines, whereas no one is hanging out in the squat rack or deadlift platform.
