Former 106mm RR gunner here. The actual spotter round was made on a shorter case, related to the BMG as the .308 is to the .30-06. I presume they were pulled from the spotter case and loaded into BMG brass. They are not designed to penetrate, just to generate a good trace and a bright flash. The spotter rifle attached to the 106 has a gas venting system that allows the gunner to tune the trajectory of a given lot of the spotter rounds to the lot of 106 rounds. The 106's trigger is actually the fine elevation knob; it's pulled to fire the spotter and pushed to fire the 106. That way, as soon as you see that the spotter round hit, you can just push the knob to get the Big Badda Boom.

12:13, You can see the dirt on the back of your Berm lift up and displace from the bullet going through the railroad ties into the dirt!

1:35 True story here, in my early days of reloading I loaded some 125 TNT for my 300WM and had the first one or two hit paper, then it just wasn’t showing up. I knew something was screwy, this rifle shot .24” groups on the regular, so I lifted my head above the rifle as I pulled the trigger and witnessed a cloud approximately 10-20 feet in front of the rifle barrel. They were literally coming apart mid-air. So when they said to not exceed 3,000fps they really meant it. I pulled the bullets for the rest of the lot and loaded them for my .308.
