Almost 60 years later and Elvis is still taking care of business. Long Live the King.

This is one of the greatest taped live performances in history. This was right after Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated so the feeling he puts into his singing this song is visceral and sincere which makes it even better!

Not only was this live, but the emotions were real. This was pure, authentic Elvis. Steve Binder produced the 1968 Comeback Special and it's worth exploring his explanation of events surrounding the special. 1968 was one of the most tumultuous years in this country's history. This song was a response to the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy - both which deeply impacted Elvis.

MLK had just been assassinated about 6 weeks prior to taping this show, Robert Kennedy (JFKs brother)  had just been assassinated 3 weeks prior to taping this show which was taped in late June of 1968.  Although taped in late June the show didn't air until December as it was billed as an Elvis Presley Christmas Special sponsored by Sears".  Elvis was deeply effected by the loss of MLK and RFK as well as the demonstrations that gripped our country and  asked his music director to come up with a appropriate song to close his show with being mindful of the turbulence that our country was going through at that time.  Riots in the streets, both ant-war and civil rights, entire blocks of cities were being burned out, including Washington D.C.!  This was as close to making a "political statement" as Elvis ever came!  This song was intended to be a "One Off" does not appear on any album except the 68 Special soundtrack.  He never performed it again!  It does not appear on any of his "Elvis Famous Hits" albums, I know because my wife owns every record that Elvis released!  She was, and still is a HUGE Elvis fan!   Elvis' manager, Tom Parker did NOT want Elvis to perform this song thinking that it would divide his fan base and Elvis would lose revenue.  In one of the few times, maybe the only time that Elvis stood up to Parker and said "NO!  I'm doing this song!"  It was that important to him.  The song includes some aspects of MLKs famous 1963 "I Have A Dream" speech that he gave in Washington D.C. before a crowd of over a million people!

Elvis never thought of himself as the king of anything. He did refer to Jesus Christ, being the only king. He also didn’t think he’d be remembered. I would like to also share with you that I am at the age. When I was 9, I accompanied my mom and my older sister Elvis Presley concert. It was cheaper to go to a concert, then to pay a babysitter back then. And it touches my heart that he is still remembered to this day. He passed in 1977. He was wrong. Nobody’s forgotten him. ♥️

Elvis Presley was and is a king of music and humanity. Elvis regularly donated to 50 charities. One of Elvis's bodyguards said: "Elvis truly loved all people!"
