As a perfectionist, Ayako seems to have found the sweet spot of not taking herself so seriously and finding joy in the process.

What a smart, wonderful, dedicated mom she is! I admire her. My mother was abusive and neglectful, and my dad was not around at all (and didn’t contribute at all financially). I wish I’d had a mom like her — especially since I was a good athlete. A mom like her would’ve made all the difference! ❤

New to running at age of 60. I used to run a lot in the Army did the combat Olympics and won the silver medal truth be told I had no idea what I was doing but I was happy really happy every one in the areas I visited were happy and my thoughts were always that if I worked hard to protect the country and people I loved one day every one in America would be happy. Your laughter is so beautiful and inspiring. I will share this video as much as I can. I love to see this country happy again. Maybe we all need to start running again.

This episode really resonated with me as a mom (and now grandma) who started running in her fifties and who is still in her fifties. I loved when Ayako said she wanted to be running in her eighties. I listened to this podcast while I was out running in 90 degree, humid weather, trying to get my run in before the storms hit this afternoon. When she said that, I was in the middle of a threshold interval, running up hill, and sweating buckets. Her words were very motivating at that moment, and I thought, “Me, too!” I never thought of that before, but I do want to be running in my eighties. Thank you both for a great podcast. Ayako has a lovely laugh and it was fun to listen to on my run. 😊

I’m 53 and started running at 50 years old. The farthest I’ve ran is a half marathon. I feel like I’m stuck at this distance. I get excited watching ultra marathon videos. Like her, I thought I had to run longer and faster to increase distance. Starting today, I’m changing my training and my thoughts. I can’t wait to hear more about how she got to where she is now. I hope I can find the video that she watched that helped her distance running. Thanks for this. I needed it. New subscriber

As a 45 yr old indo-viking meeself - this is so much more usable as compared to the elites. The elites motivate, but this interview really brings it home for beginner runners. I started in 2022 with Low heart rate training, but didnt see the results i wanted. I perservered for 1½ year with 4 times a week zone 2 trainings for 1½ yrs and it enabled me to run a sub 35 min 5k. My lungs along with my calves have almost no elasticity, Im pre diabetic, realtively high on triglycerides and have hip flexor aches as a constant soul mate.
Nothing amazing for the average viking, but something special for my body type :) Now Im trying for the 10k for June 7th and am leaning into zone 2 training again. It feels amazing and f frustrating at the same time! But it gives me a sense of purpose. Doing my slow run and walking at 135 bpm is so frustrating sometimes - but luckily I found a stationary bike that I can slog on for 1-2 hrs of zone 2 so that helps.
Cmon mitochondria - plz grow bro - I NEED YA! :D

55:41 the great quotes never end! “Micro improvements and enjoying the process”.
“Don’t be results oriented “.
“Running isn’t easy, it’s hard. You gotta make it fun”.
“Knowing what works for you is the first step”.
Wow!!! So many great quotes! I needed this video! I’m now excited to start running differently. With a different mindset! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Can’t wait to watch more content!

My wife ran a marathon to check it off her bucket list. At 45 she had never run any races. Not even a 5K. She did Hal Higdon beginner training program that peaks at about 38 miles a week. She ran a 3:43 and beat her Boston qualifying time by almost 18 minutes. I ran it with her and I was nowhere near my BQ time. It took me 2 more tries to qualify and we both ran Boston in 2017.

I agree to spending a long time building that aerobic base. I too have spent many years being inactive. Running is certainly humbling. Also rewarding.
