  The fully automatic M1911 .45 was called a “Dillinger.” It was called that because 1930s gangster John Dillinger famously carried a .45 modified to fire full auto with an extended magazine and a vertical grip from a Thompson SMG attached to the front of it. <br><br>Cut down BARs also were first used by the motor bandits of the 1930s. Clyde Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde fame had one that had a cut down barrel and removed stock to make it easier to use from a car or conceal it under a coat. <br><br>And as for increasing rates of fire there’s a story from Marines on Guadalcanal drilling holes in the bolts of M1917 water cooled machineguns to increase their rates of fire. &nbsp;Similar modifications could easily be done to other guns to make them cycle faster as less mass has to be moved, though that would wear the weapons out a lot faster as well.

  My grandfather served in the European theater as an artillery man. But I guess at towards the end, he was assigned to clear rooms. He describes doing so in some sort of castle. Armed with am M1 carbine, he told me that they had welded two together to make it a 30 rounder, as described in the video. At first I thought he meant taped and jungle-magged, but no he said joined to make a 30 shooter. That in the gun, one 15 rounder in the pocket.

  The most famous one is probably Cpl. Tony Stein&apos;s &quot;Stinger.&quot; I beleive Forgotten Weapons did a segment on that one. Then there is the supposed &quot;Basilone bail&quot;- a hooped handle to pass over the barrell of the 1919 light machine gun, so you can carry it and fire it.

  I remember hearing troops during the GWOT using the M231 Port firing weapon with a gooseneck red dot as a rifle for dismounted use as it was more compact and handy than the M16A2 or M4 carbine (in addition to being full auto). <br><br>Neat to see this tradition being carried on into modern times.

  The M2 Carbine not only incorporated full auto, it included an extended magazine as well. It&apos;s great when weapons incorporate feedback from field trials to optimize their capabilities.
