Across North America, “Thunderbird” is an English catch-all for diverse Indigenous spiritual and ancestral traditions—not the name of a single zoological species. This evidence-based documentary asks a narrower question: could encounters with unusually large birds have helped make the image of a colossal ruler of the sky believable? We follow the fossil evidence from Teratornis merriami, a late Ice Age North American bird with an estimated 11–12-foot wingspan, to the fragmentary remains of Aiolornis incredibilis, whose estimated wingspan may have reached 16–18 feet. Then we cross the Pacific to Haast’s eagle, the largest true eagle known to science—a powerful New Zealand predator that lived alongside people and hunted moa weighing more than 400 pounds. It may also have contributed to Māori traditions about the Pouākai, although no direct evidence proves that connection. But the evidence creates a problem. North America gives us the right location but no confirmed link to a Thunderbird tradition. New Zealand gives us the clearest human contact, but it is more than 7,000 miles away. No fossil or archaeological discovery proves that Thunderbird was a surviving prehistoric bird. This documentary separates confirmed evidence, plausible biology and folklore without treating spiritual traditions as zoological field reports.
