Aircraft Loses All Power: ATC Saves the Day!

  I was an air traffic controller at Chicago center, I was working an emergency, lost all power, they had to land at a smaller field, reminds of this situation a lot. They landed safe, the next day I came into work, the two pilots from that airplane came to the Center to thank me personally for helping them out. That was THE highlight of my 33 year career, thanks for bringing back those memories!

  The ATC and the pilots on the other plane deserve recognition for going far out of their way to help someone who needed it. Most people, at heart, want to help others. These folks did an excellent job of just that.

  As a retired controller, this makes me extremely proud. She was caring, thoughtful and professional. This shows how controllers and pilots work together to keep our system and people safe. She was &quot;selfless&quot;, kept focus, and got our brothers home safe. In today&apos;s political climate and fierce appetite for negative aviation news, this event was extremely positive. This is what controllers do day in and day out. Bravo Zulu!

  Im a Phenom captain. What Embraer calls an electrical emergency is an automatic power reserve mode that the airplane will go into when there is a dual generator failure. The Phenom has two batteries that we are told will give us up to 45 min in this condition. During the electrical emergency you are left with only one Garmin display in reversionary mode and the electric standby instrument. You also loose most of your equipment including the auto pressure, autopilot, flaps, trim control, yaw damper/ventral rudder, spoilers, stall protection, lights, and anti ice to name a few. After that 45 mins is up, you loose every single flight and engine instrument, with the exception of the magnetic compass. &nbsp;All you have is control of the plane, since its cables and pushrods and the engine control is still available since it has a backup engine driven power source for the fadec. This is the first time Ive heard of this actually happening to a Phenom. The crew did an incredible job being faced with such a stressful condition.

  We often say when we are in trouble that ATC asks us to copy a number. I hope both of the AC’s asked for her to copy her direct number, honors medals and I’m sure this amazing woman, controller, just goes home and says just another day. But she’s a silent hero. Every day changing lives.
