Chip Whistler has always stood out as a unique antagonist for a slice-of-life comedy like Big City Greens. Even if he's not a grand threat quite on the same level as Belos in Owl House or The Core in Amphibia, the matter that Big City Greens' strong writing ended up gradually building him up into a genuine villain feels like a bit of a deconstruction and subversion of most cartoon comedies where the main recurring antagonist stays to be a butt of the joke (outside the rare chance of a movie adaptation like Plankton in Spongebob or Mojo Jojo in PPG) and instead uses it to show when that kind of character gets pushed to their limits and makes not one, but two instances of putting Big City in some kind of grander peril.

I storyboarded Greens Underground! in the scene where Keys tells Cricket they're calling off the search for Chip, I had originally wrote along the lines of "Sorry Eddie, but the location of the replaceable inanimate belongings of our beloved wealthy politicians, takes priority over the safety of our regular taxpaying citizens. you understand." aaaand it was understandably cut lol. but it got a laugh in the pitching room

Damn, Chip is actually terrifying. The fact there’s a hour worth of information on this man is genuinely crazy. I also really like this analysis

You know both the Mr. Peabody and Sherman show and big city greens both had the ending where the villain buys the protagonist‘s property, kicks them out big coffee and Mr. Peabody‘s penthouse

2:36 I feel the reason why people don’t talk about Big City Greens is because it’s a slice of life show. The Internet at the time (and even today) cares more about shows that try to have some deep lore or mystery to make theories/headcanons about. Big City Greens is more popular among casual audiences. Same reason why shows like Craig of the Creek or Summer Camp Island had a long run despite not getting much attention. Most of the show’s fan base is probably on TikTok since the creator makes videos on there.

Anyways, I think the lesson in Chip’s Revenge makes sense, but just could have been worded better. The lesson is that revenge is never the answer, no matter the reason. That was the point of the scene where Cricket abandoned the bomb to go after Chip. At that point, Cricket didn’t go after Chip to save the city or protect his family. He just wanted to get back at Chip for everything he did in the past. When Tilly says Cricket is becoming just like Chip, she means that Cricket is risking everything he has just to get revenge. Similar to how Chip risked and lost everything he had to get revenge on the Greens. Yes, Cricket’s reasons for wanting to get back at Chip were more valid, but Cricket doesn’t get to decide what the punishment is.

Another lesson is that while revenge isn’t the answer, neither is forgiveness. The Greens tried to forgive Chip in the past and it didn’t work out. Cricket never forgave Chip after what he did, he let the authorities deal with him.

I agree that the episode had some pacing issues and should have been longer. The part with Chip becoming the new advisor and the Order of the Fang preparing for the attack could have been its own episode. It would have given more time to flesh out the villain dynamics.

tbf, I don't really think Tilly was trying to defend Chip, the way I see it she didn't want Cricket to do something he'll spend the rest of his life regretting. Plus Cricket was going after Chip due to revenge rather then justice, as he chose going after him then stopping the bomb. Saying he'll be just like Chip didn't mean Cricket will be just as bad as him, as Tilly even went on to say Cricket was right that Chip won't change and is driven by revenge and hate. Her point was that Cricket was doing the same right now, and since Cricket isn't a bad kid, he realized his mistake and was the better man then Chip.

I love big city greens cuz its a accurate representation to, not just the greens but legit everyone they interact with.(yes, even chip and zap.), i also like the call outs without making anything too innacurate.(like how with chip and cricket, some people, even adults, will legit get upset at a child when said child has proven them wrong somehow.😂)

I also love tille as i acted just as strange as her on good days when younger and gloria in my later years.:3
