I think people have now basically started upgrading their phones when the battery starts to die

Upgrades slowed down, but they also charge 3-4x what they used to. Top end was $5-600. Now it's $3000.

I was born in '72 and have had computers since 1984. I have followed pretty much all trends (home computers, all major game consoles, and PCs) over the last four decades. All I can say is that you are right.

The cycles where you needed a new computer to play the latest games in good quality have become longer and longer over the last 8 years. The improvements in graphics have also now reached a level where you have problems seeing differences in the details. You have to pay attention to things like reflections and correct or incorrect lighting. Most people just don't care about that anyway.

The limits are our eyes and ears. Once the music sounds pretty much perfect and the visuals match reality at first glance, there is no massive need or room for improvement. It's like TV development: First tiny black and white TV -> color -> flat screens -> SD -> HD -> big screens -> OLED -> 4K.

Yes, now you COULD buy 8K, but many people already don't see a major difference between Full HD on Blu-ray, 4K from a streaming service, and 4K on Ultra HD Blu-ray. It all looks nice/great. Physics and interactions will be way more important in the future than just higher fidelity and better textures.

My current system is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X (12x 3.8GHz / 4.6GHz Turbo) and an 11GB MSI RTX 2080 Ti, and I bought it 5 years ago. I could afford something way more recent, but to be honest, all the games I play and care about run at high settings at >60 fps on my Odyssey G85 OLED Monitor. I see no reason to upgrade for minimal gain.

Maybe GTA6 on PC will change that and I'll get a 5-series beast (or even 6-series at that point). But right now... nah.

It feels like graphics have reached a plateau. Without a dramatic shift between generations, there's less of a reason to upgrade.

Not only prices, but Isn't the lack of game optimization also a big factor here? I feel like we're double fisted

Us older ones have felt this for a over a decade now.
When I got into computers, late 90's, you HAD to buy a new GPU every year to two years just to play games that were coming out.
It wasn't odd to buy a completely new system every 2 years or so.
It wasn't until the 2010's where things really started to slow down with 14nm+++++++++++++
Now things are so glacial I haven't built a new PC in over 5 years and it still plays everything just fine.

Graphics cards are $2000 now? That was the total cost of the entire bleeding-edge PC I built in the mid 2010s, and that thing lasted me a decade before I had to upgrade.

I was very confused when my 2023 replacement for my 2015 Laptop had the same amount of RAM and storage...

A 1996 computer would have been completely obsolete in 2000. Meanwhile my 2017 gaming laptop is still going strong.

It's the S curve of innovation. At first things are slow, then there are massive break through and there's rapid progress, but after a while it's getting harder and harder to make things better.
