The movie is called north by northwest because when Thornhill and the professor go to South Dakota they fly north on northwest airlines. Look at the ticket counter in the airport scene. It’s a play on the words

A train speeding into a tunnel was also the closing shot for THE THIN MAN in 1932.

The woman who played Grant’s mother was actually 8 years older than him, not a year younger.

It is my absolute favourite... (out of thousands...)
1. Brilliant cinematography!!!
2. The (as mentioned) opening title credits by Saul Bass - BRILLIANT
3. The plot is so original... and daring ( making love in a train - not married!!!), getting fined for tuppence for drunk driving, THE plane chase... , being sexy.., being innocent but chased by everybody.
4. The 'cheated' scenes (studio re-makes) are brilliant!! There is one shot, after the murder scene in the (faked) United Nations Building. I took a screenshot; that's how brilliant it is. It shows Cary Grant running out of the building after the murder from a bird's-eye view. So exceptional, special, and so fast gone!!!
I watched thousands of movies during the last 60 years (obsessed), but this one is just the cherry on top!!!!

Several years ago, I was waiting for a bus on the side of the highway (in Miami) and could not help but think of North by Northwest.

Leo G Carroll was in more Hitchcock films than any other actor. Hitch liked him because, "He does nothing well." Later, he played Mr Waverley in "The Man from UNCLE" - another spy story link.

About the James Bond connection. Legend (truth?) has it that Hitchcock was asked to direct the first James Bond movie (Dr. No, 1962). Allegedly, Hitch said, "I already directed the first Bond movie. It was called North By Northwest".

In the beginning he is not ordering a drink. He wants to call his mother and is told he has to go to the telephone. And that is why he is mistaken.

Love this movie but there must be simpler ways of killing someone than sending a cropduster!
