Thank you for naming Ann Lowe. I bet those gowns have been handed down in those white families as heirlooms but not the woman whose skill created them.

This story is similar to the women in the movie "Hidden Figures." A talented person who doesn't get recognition.

So SAD! This is the United States of America. A place that pretended to be honest, but in reality is built on corruption, murder and theft. So sad, because it could have been Godly. 😢😢😢😢😢

Good attempt at telling this account. My grandmother was born around the same time and the Black teachers in the one room school houses were quite brilliant. It was the lack of facilities, supplies, books and instructional days which kept Black students behind. Even with limited resources, the competencies were very robust. My grandparents were highly literate despite the inequities. Moreover, for Jackie to call her a colored dress maker, undermined Ms. Lowes brilliance as a designer. She died broke because these "rich" women did not adequately pay her for the delivered gowns. They would low ball her after the dress was made, as though she should be happy they wanted to work with her at all. Her poverty had NOTHING to do with her education, it was the lack of integrity of her clients.

😢 this makes me sad what a gifted woman and to receive no acknowledgement hurts.

I hope to one day come across a whole collection of this woman’s work and keep it so I can pass it on to the next generation and tell my kids kid about this talented black seamstress.
