This is the kind of advice that is exactly what is wrong with medical school admissions. "We read a lot of stories about grandparents with illnesses; please remember that may not be so unique." What a load of a you know what, honestly. Yes, inevitably people's first exposures to medicine often involve family member's health or their own health...shocking.

For any premed student watching this, the purpose of the medical school application is to tell your story and to demonstrate your interest in medical school. The goal is not to "be unique." It is your reasons and your authentic story. Do not let these frankly random people invalidate your experiences in life that have led you to your career, and if people like this are going to do that, you probably do not want to go their school. Someone out there will respect your story.

Ykw I wrote about my grandfather in my personal statement as my hook and got into multiple MD programs. If your grandparents made an impact in your passion for medicine be willing to write about them. It would be a disservice to yourself to leave them out of your story of medicine if they really made an impact.

A personal statement, but without truthful personal details because she's tired of reading them... Don't write the truth. Just write something exciting for her to read because your application is for her entertainment apparently.

This video is so helpful for premeds who don’t have access to quality pre-med advisors. Thank you so much for posting this.

In defending for the traditional pre-med students.
Please don’t assume they are ā€œtoo youngā€ or ā€œnot mature enough.ā€ Many of these students have been focused and disciplined from the very beginning. They have developed excellent time management skills, planned their goals carefully, and made significant sacrifices to pursue medicine.
True maturity is not only measured by age or the number of years taken to reach a goal. It is also shown through dedication, responsibility, focus, and the willingness to sacrifice for a purpose. Nothing wrong for the young people learned life experiences from or through the lives of their grandparents. So do mention your grandparents. Experience you had with family members are true values.
Please don’t be biased against traditional applicants. Many of them enter medical school well-prepared: they succeed academically, listen well, adapt quickly, and bring the energy, health, and resilience needed for the challenges ahead.

lol so we’re supposed to not lie but also come up with an experience that is not common and entertaining for you… ok.

I understand how lying on an application is bad but i think looking at addresses and assuming the tax bracket by it is not fair. You can lose everything in a year you can be worse off or much better in a year. So in terms of red flags, the home i send all of my mail to is where i know i can reliably get it and is the address i use for everything. If someone is applying and doesn't have a residence if they use the address of a family member that lives in a good area that is what she would see and assumes you are lying because of that?....because that is what I heard so i wish i could ask for a bit more depth on her response.

Ok so Jesus visited one day and told me I will become a dr, would that be unique and entertaining enough? Since when can we pick and choose, or dress up our own real life experiences in our ā€œpersonalā€ statements not involve someone that we care about gets sick, if that was real and personal?
