I used to think I was just being antisocial not a good fisher of opportunities, but honestly I think I was just lost trying to become someone I wasn’t. I met this girl from my school’s pre-med frat who seemed perfect. Research labs, tutoring, TA work, student government, orchestra, insane GPA, surviving finals week sleeping on the floor type dedication. Meanwhile I was a freshman struggling in chem, comparing myself to everyone around me, wondering why I felt so behind. Then I realized something ugly about myself: I picked biology/pre-med mostly because everyone around me was doing it. My siblings are successful in medicine too — one is a veterinarian, the other is an internal medicine resident — and ever since I was little I’ve always felt “less than” them academically. So I kept chasing this image of the perfect pre-med student because my parents wanted it badly, and because I thought maybe if I followed the same path I’d finally feel worthy too. But there are literally thousands of pre-med bio majors exactly like that. Trying to survive someone else’s dream. I recently changed my major from biology to psychology, and honestly it felt like the first decision I made for myself instead of for validation but not gonna lie haven’t told my parents yet. I’m still figuring life out — currently stuck between dental school and becoming an anesthesiologist assistant — but at least now I’m trying to figure out what I actually want. And maybe that’s enough for now. I still feel like an imposter around smarter and more accomplished people sometimes. But I realized the goal isn’t becoming “perfect” overnight. It’s continuing anyway, learning anyway, and slowly building your own life instead of copying someone else’s footsteps. And I don’t feel bad from my God knows 3.1-2 gpa as a freshman on her finals week and I enrolled in two summer classes to fix my gpa up a little more.

Reminds me of me right now pre med in the hospital ER as a volunteer and some days just feel daunting like I don’t belong or that im a burden. Something still drives me to go every week though and that is the interaction with patients and helping them make their day

What a helpful video, you could hold yourself back with ego and high expectations vs. just putting in lots of unglamorous slightly embarrassing work.

Very insightful for not blocking your own career goals

Manly because I winged the MCAT and got a 92nd percentile to get into medical school and played a lot of rugby in college which attributed to a 3.5 GPA.

"Dumber" is probably the wrong word. I wouldn't call someone that isn't a complete book warm, gunner, and no social skills that got a few C's in prereqs "dumber".

I only quit hospital volunteering to focus on a more rewarding volunteer job. But only once the better option was secured after 2 years.

What is a 2.20 MCAT? Man proving again he's not afraid to embarrass himself. (your content is excellent... but we all make errors)

Respect it but I take issue with that anecdote about your research versus your role model's(and I get you may have made it up). The fact is, your lab and research environment and area of study may been have different and thus had differing standards and timelines for publishing high impact work. Some fields could take several (like 4-5 years) years to culminate in a 1st author paper in a prestige journal no matter how much you like it, how much you work, etc. Sometimes things just do not work out the way you wanted or envisioned and that is okay. For example, you could get scooped if in a particularly competitive niche of research. So many things can happen. If what you said is true/real, please do not view it as a personal failing of yours back then or lead others to believe that a similar situation they may have had was that. And yes, I understand that you were illustrating a broader point about chasing an unattainable achetype, but I think details sometimes matter and people(including yourself) need to show themselves some grace when in the face of some of these challenges.
