  makes me happy to see u go to places where most filipino gen zs and millenials go to. bgc is an expat trap, makati is the real deal for a metro manila city experience. even quezon city where most top universities are. makati is also THE place if u wanna go for a coffee/food crawl. there will be good cafes and restaurants on every corner

  Manila millennial here, born and raised. I used to live in Cebu for a few years in my 20s. I also have roots there and made friends there when I moved there. It would not be unusual for local Cebuanos and foreign tourists to trash-talk Manila to me, as if expecting me to agree that Cebu is better. Well, in a lot of ways, Cebu has its virtues, but Manila is a place only its kids and its dreamers can understand, I believe. I don&apos;t take offence that people think Manila is a shithole, I can understand knowing their perspective. <br><br>I always say, Manila was never made for visitors. It was built for those who put their stake in the city&apos;s game. Its secrets only shared gradually among those who commute its streets daily. Even the attitudes are wildly different from that of the islands. <br><br>I once gave this metaphor to a Cebuano friend: to me, Cebu or Davao feels like that auntie that you have who kind of did things the right way, the best way she could. Her house smells like food, she renews her vows with her husband every 5 years, most of her kids are nice, maybe save for one nasty asshole, they go to church every Sunday, they have karaoke parties on special occasions, and they know their neighbors, although auntie could be a bit of a gossip. Then Manila is your histrionic, flighty mother who occasionally dabbles in drugs. She is fun, deeply intelligent, cultured and street smart, sometimes glamorous, and your dad hates her but is also fascinated by her, long after they already separated. She is both scary and sad on her bad days, she might even steal from you from time to time to finance her habits, she doesn&apos;t trust the neighbors, but she loves you and has a kindness that doesn&apos;t necessarily come with niceness, you have the best memories with her on her good days... and at the end of the day, she is still mom.

  oh about the cash change thing, they ask you for a specific amount so they can give you back a bill (not coins, which people hate to carry cus its heavy). so you can also get rid of your coins that you might be carrying.<br><br>for example if you&apos;re buying something worth P549, and u give a P1000 bill, cashiers will usually ask you &quot;if you have 49 pesos&quot; so they can give you a P500 bill as change. otherwise, they would give you the exact amount of P451 which means you will probably have coins to carry! It&apos;s kind of an unspoken culture at this point.

  That&apos;s the owner of that restaurant., Mang Tootz as we call him. He started his eatery near UST campus in Manila. Our go to place to eat when we were in College. He is very friendly and welcoming to people. Nice to see him in this video.

  Thank you for giving Manila the chance! ❤ It&apos;s definitely not perfect and I understand how the stereotype and the hate came about because the reality is there is a lot of truth to these. But yeah, Manila is more than that. It has its own charm and character and if people can look past its imperfections, it&apos;s a good spot to explore in a week or two before going to the islands.
