This song is a reworking of the song by Blind Willie Johnson from 1927 called "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed", which, is itself adapted from older traditional sources and had already been covered by other artists such as Bob Dylan. In it, Jimmy plays slide throughout on his Danelectro guitar set to an open E tuning, Jonesy plays fretless bass and Bonzo's drums pummel you into submisssion. It's yet another great example of Zep's "light and shade" dynamics which allow the listener to flow on a journey of hard rock/heavy blues. The ending was actually just them jamming because they hadn't planned out a proper song ending yet. The chatter at the end is Bonzo coughing, Robert saying "cough" then you can hear Bonzo say "That's gonna be the one, isn't it?" and someone in the booth says "Come have a listen then." as Bonzo replies "Oh yes, thank you." Later after Robert's car accident, supposedly he didn't like to sing the song, feeling it hit a little too close to home. Led Zeppelin had two credos; "tight but loose" and "whisper to thunder" so they went where they wanted musically. Make no mistake, they had creative and artistic control in a vice grip and played what and how they decided, not according to what their manager said, or the A&R person, or the label executives - how THEY wanted. An excellent live performance of this is from Earls Court. If you search for it on YouTube, it's called "Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying - 1975 Earls Court" and is 12 minutes and 23 seconds.

John Paul Jones is not appreciated as much as he should be.. He's an amazing bassist and multi instrumentalist. His work on the keyboards and mandolin are out of this world. My respect to him
