“She just cannot help herself” is the perfect way to describe Vriska’s patterns

just read through homestuck... the worst thing that could've happened to vriska was to become hussie's favorite character. from the moment that became obvious, she was shoehorned into god knows how many plotlines and had her development hampered at best, and was actively rewarded for her cruelty at worst. easily the most frustrating homestuck character

as the biggest vriska serket stan of 2024, she is a terrible person. hell if caliborn wasn't born to be a destructive menace she might actually be the worst person in the webcomic.

it's just a matter of "do you like her being a terrible person or do you not"

The irony of saying her circumstances don't matter and that her intentions are irrelevant is that she says the same thing constantly when applied to anyone except herself
She says something along the lines of "if you could stop Lord English, but don't then you're responsible for everything he does"

And she has a cruel concept of fairness, "Terezi only lost two eyes, but I lost Seven!"
It reeks of privilege, like "My neighbor's house burned down, causing smoke damage to my stained glass windows. Replacing those windows cost more than the market value of their shitty house, so I'm the real victim"

Great video <3
A little rambling, but that's what to be expected

The annoying thing about Vriska, and really about Homestuck as a whole is... okay, imagine if Undertale made Sans' unexpected popularity as a character into a joke in the actual game, and then just kept doing that joke over and over until it got old, and then turned the fact that people were getting really tired of that joke into another joke and ran that one into the ground too. And then justified it in-universe by giving Sans cosmic significance as someone destined to be unexpectedly popular and to have that be joked about to death.
That's basically Vriska, and I think by the time act 6 rolled around, the writing was really relying on this joke about her being a frustrating and polarizing character and how it's perfect for the Thief of Light, and ignoring the stuff that makes her actually interesting as a person.
Also yeah, crazy women are fun and all but Hussie does seem to treat his characters who are male abuse survivors as a big joke most of the time. I'll always have a soft spot for Homestuck, but it's because of that and many other issues that I wouldn't consider it very good. Tavros deserved so much better.

What really gets me is how people treat her "You don't need to be a good person to be a hero" quote as something deep when it's literally just paraphrased "The ends justify the means."

And she really lived by that quote, didn't she? She continued to be horrible to her friends, harming and even k***ing them, but she never allowed herself to stop, process those feelings and be a better person to them in the long run. No, in her view one heroic action is all that would take to erase all the harm she'd done. She didn't REALLY harm Tavros in a significant way, because he would suddenly become strong one day and none of her abuse would stick. She didn't REALLY cause a disaster by creating Bec Noir because she would be the one to defeat him also. She could treat her friends as cruelly as she pleased, as long as there was this one big action that would overshadow everything

And that is not the right way to think. Homestuck really goes out of its way to prove Vriska's ideology wrong in act 5. Nobody liked her. Even her most loyal friends abandoned her because she commited literal crimes against them. She realized the extent of her cruelty in her conversation with John before the fight with Bec Noir on some level, but still ended that with "Haha but now I'll go fight Bec and it will be a heroic death and it will be so cool and everyone will like me again ::::D" She still didn't listen to Terezi when she said that her going to Bec would lead to disaster, because her obsession with justifying the means with and epic end is stronger than literally anything else. Vriska's story originally ended with her accepting that her passing is just and deciding to give up on her desperate clawing for heroism and just live in the moment while treating others humanely. It's a beautiful and fitting ending that disproves her "The ends justify the means" ideology. One great action won't undo all the harm you've done, but consistently trying to be better will prevent it from happening again and do good to both yourself and others

But the retcon completely erases this. When she got the ultimate weapon, that is, when she got the right to defeat the most evil thing in the universe, she suddenly got the right to treat everyone horribly. Not only was she neccessary, but everyone loved her suddenly? Like you said, if you need a bad person to do something you'll be like "Ugh, fine." But everyone loved her so much, wanted to talk to her all the time and praised her all the time. Even the people who hated her actually had a pitch crush on her. All of a sudden, Vriska's ideology was proven right. Her one heroic gesture WAS enough to make everyone forget what she did and love her unconditionally

It's honestly baffling how she was actually able to convince not just the audience, but also THE AUTHOR, of her broken logic. Makes me feel like she's some kind of a mind parasite leaking into the real world. It's also why Vriska is such a contentious character. Everyone knows someone like her in real life. Everyone knows someone cruel who got what they wanted by being cruel. And some people see through the facade and get angry, while some people genuinely get tricked by their confidence and success and start believing it was justified. It's honestly sociologically fascinating

Vriska CAN be tragic and well intentioned....but all that does not excuse the truth of the matter: she's a narcistic sadistic glory hound who cares more about being an all important hero than about actually being anything 'heroic'. All her justifications are jsut excuses to try and not face what ahorrible piece of shit she is, ultimately even JOHN sees through her nonsense once he sees what the other trolls think about her and what she actually does and acts like.

She's not a tragic figure, she's an asshole. She doesn't care if she's the villain or the hero, as long as she's IMPORTANT.

HOMESTUCK ENDING SPOILERS IF THAT MATTERS

---
----
---
---
---
---
it's why I actually think it's rather notable that the comic ends with her big epic victory happening entirely offscreen, seemingly leading to her death or at least trapped in the middle of a black hole and with her 'grand victory' ultimately being just summoning what may be alternate versions of the comic's actual heroes arriving to beat the big bad FOR her. Because this IS her punishment: an ignoble, unseen victory from which she can't take ANY glory.

Because the truth is, Vriska....you're not the REAL hero of the story. You're the side character.

Terezi learned the valuable lesson that murder for justice is still just as bad as any other kinda murder. and you have to deal with that burden.
Vriska learned...... idk getting killed sucks? what ever, Hell tier mode! looooooool ::::D

I feel the worst thing about Vriska is that there are many moments where her character could develop for the better but doesn't. A character who refuses to change, or more accurately an author who doesn't want the character to change from her initial concept of a mean bitchy bully, is very frustrating to deal with.
Whenever i think of Vriska (or more accuratley Hussie) insisting they stuck the landing with her supposed character arc, i think of Meg from Family Guy responding to Lois saying "All those things are behind me now, i'm a better person now because of those experiences." with "Are you? Are you a better person?".
