A smithy was an important component of the community.  The smith had prestige among working people.  Some thought them to have magical powers.  The video empathizes the negative.

Spoiler. It sucked to be mostly anyone in Medivel times. Famine, plauge, war. Most people died before seeing their grandchildren.

It’s 9 p.m. in Kyiv. I’m a Ukrainian soldier, still on night watch, wrapped in a silence that feels heavier than any air-raid. No sirens tonight—just the quiet, and the weight of everything we’ve lost. In that darkness, your video found me. And for a brief, fragile moment, the loneliness didn’t feel so endless. The fear didn’t feel so sharp. Thank you… from the depths of a heart that’s seen too much, but still beats.

I do blacksmithing in my garage in the summertime here in Arizona.  Two days ago, it was 122 in the garage with the forge going. The sound of 85 degress and the forges sounds rather chilly.

What you said about summer months brought back memories, nothing as bad as dramatic but I was a trainee chef for Trust House Forte in the hot summers of 1975/76 I remember standing between 2 massive fat fryers both the size of kitchen tables cooking 40-50 pieces of chicken in each (we cooked food for the airlines) it was so hot outside and standing between the fryers I used to leave work soaked in sweat hair (long in those days) stuck to my head. Happy days!

Lost me when he acted like passing down the trade of smithing was akin to receiving an unwanted family heirloom... Being a black smith wasnt extremely easy but u were literally guaranteed work, good pay and it was seen as an honor in those days to follow in the footsteps of ur father... Plus u weren't learning to smith while the other kids were out having fun... Their asses were working to some degree also. Depending in what their family did.

I wear linen shirts while forging. It actually works better than bring shirtless. The linen wicks the sweat away from my body.

Medieval blacksmiths played such an essential role in society, yet their work was so grueling. How did they balance the physical demands with the artistry of their craft?
