THIS MONTH: Sunlight Has Never Touched This Crater — And China Is Flying a Robot Into It This Month

There is ground on the Moon that has been measured at minus 248 degrees Celsius. It is colder than the surface of Pluto — and it is a few days away by rocket. The Moon stands almost perfectly upright relative to its orbit. The Sun never climbs more than about one and a half degrees above its poles; hold your thumb up at arm's length and you have covered more sky than that. So anything with a raised rim casts a shadow that never moves. The floor of Shackleton crater — twenty-one kilometres across, over four kilometres deep — sits permanently below the horizon of its own wall. No season fixes it. No rotation fixes it. Minus 415 Fahrenheit. Twenty-five degrees above absolute zero. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter recorded it as the coldest place ever measured anywhere in the solar system. Later this month, if the window holds, China is going to fly a robot into it. And the easy answer — the version nearly every retelling gives you — is that the spacecraft is landing in the crater to go get the ice. That isn't what happens. The lander stays in the light. It comes down on a sunlit peak near Shackleton's southeastern ridge, around eighty-eight point eight degrees south, its solar panels standing vertically on end like sails to catch a sun that only ever grazes the horizon. Something else goes over the edge: a six-legged machine carrying its own fuel and its own thrusters, built to walk, climb, crawl and jump, designed for at least three powered leaps. It launches itself off the rim, flies into ground that has never had a sunrise, lands in the cold — and then walks away from its own landing site on its legs, because its exhaust has just disturbed the one thing it came for. Nobody has ever touched lunar polar ice. Not once. Every confident claim comes from an impact plume in 2009, an infrared fingerprint from orbit, and neutron counts taken from above. Of all the large permanently shadowed regions on the Moon, only three showed significant neutron suppression. And in March of this year, a University of Hawaii–led study aimed a camera built specifically to see inside shadowed craters at six of them and found no widespread surface ice above its detection threshold. Twenty years of argument. Three kinds of evidence. Not one of them from the ground. In this video: why a world tilted almost to zero grows shadows that nothing can ever move; how eight thousand two hundred kilograms of spacecraft flew to Hainan Island aboard an Antonov An-124 while its Long March 5 was trucked in from the port over two days in July; what the hopper actually does once it is down — drill, seal, heat, and read the escaping gas with an analyzer specified to better than one hundredth of one percent by weight; why the hydrogen-to-deuterium ratio it measures is a fingerprint that can say whether the water arrived on comets or was made in place by the solar wind; why a 2023 study of the Moon's wandering spin axis may have cut the ice-collecting window to about one point eight billion years; and why a cancelled-then-revived American rover and a restructured Artemis leave one machine going first. Go outside tonight and look up. That floor is on the object you are looking at, and it is a trap — any water molecule that ever wandered in cannot evaporate and cannot escape. Whatever it caught is still sitting there in the dark, right now, twenty-five degrees above absolute zero. This is what happens when a machine jumps off the edge of the light. 🔔 New videos every week. Subscribe, and when the answer comes back, we'll read it together.
