  My 11th great grandmother, Elizabeth Alcock Hutchins, was the last arrested as a witch in Salem, accused by Ann Putnam, Jr. , herself. Luckily, being the last, she survived without going on trial.

  To me, what happened in Salem, and multiple other locations around the World,  was superstitious hysteria. Cold, blind, fear. And vast ignorance. ANYTHING different,  new, unknown got labeled witchcraft or evil or savage. These people knew nothing of the land they came to, trusted Noone except their bibles and judged everything and everyone they saw. The witch trials were inevitable. Horrendously wrong, unjust, but inevitable in a climate of fear, superstition and judgement. The criminals in all of it are the preachers, the accusers, the executioner. And the mindset of an already terrified immigrant populace.

  There were no gallows with a trap door. They had a tree and a ladder. The condemned were made to climb the ladder, were then bound and noosed, and then "turned off" the ladder to strangle.

  Strange that those that were accused of being witches were very poor and depended on their neighbours charity, anyone with any sense would think that those who were witches would never go without.  They would not be starving or without any means of feeding themselves, quite the opposite!!!  You would think they would look at those who are wealthy !!!
