  An interesting tidbit comes from Picard, Season 2, where the Queen looked into parallel timelines and saw the Collective was always extinguished. &nbsp;This would include the one where the Borg overran the Federation, resulting in crazy-desperate Riker, &quot;You don&apos;t know what it&apos;s like where we&apos;re from. &nbsp;The Federation is gone. &nbsp;The Borg is everywhere!&quot; &nbsp;(Another interesting tidbit was that the Enterprise from that timeline had apparently survived battle with the Borg, as it was seriously damaged, but had somehow escaped the engagement.) &nbsp;Without the Federation to put Species 8427 in check in that timeline, 8472 likely rolled over the Collective and wiped it out.

  My theory is that the Queen is an immortal remnant of a scientist who was critical to the Borg&apos;s origin. She&apos;s not fully in control; the system itself uses her as a focal point and a command node. But in exchange for her inescapable entanglement within the collective she helped create, she remains undying, able to pass her consciousness into different host bodies (hence different actresses playing the Queen) and retaining the kind of personality that remains suppressed in all other Borg. She&apos;s basically a vestige of the Borg&apos;s earliest moments, and even if she has functionally overstayed her welcome when it comes to efficiency and optimization, she serves as a kind of cultural anchor for the collective.

  The single cube being sent twice also makes sense if they did the first to figure out why they got a signal from Earth centuries earlier from drones that shouldn&apos;t have existed, the second returning to try and assimilate a civilization that had destroyed multiple cubes and shown itself a threat that, after losing the cube and sending the sphere back in time closing the loop that caused them to be aware of the Federation in the first place, they became reluctant to attack again given the cost they had incurred already fighting the Federation. They&apos;d have likely gone to a larger scale war as they had with more advanced Delta Quadrant civilizations had they not found themselves in a war with Species 7482 that put them on the defence for the first time in their history that only saw them again kicked when they where already down by Voyager increasing both the social infections the Enterprise D started then did so physically with transphasic technology they couldn&apos;t adapt to.<br><br>Simply put, they where caught off guard by multiple enemies beyond their abilities in a short span of time.

  I remember back in the days of TNG there was a comic book series based on an alternate world where the enterprise had failed to stop the borg and earth was being assimilated by the borg. &nbsp;But they had become bogged down in the ground war and Riker and most of the rest of the crew continued to fight on using what was left of the damaged Enterprise-D.

  Cubes aren’t really “ships” they are small scale mobile starbases. They are valuable in ways more comparable to a small fleet than to a single ship
