My grandfather had 6,000 acres of the Pickets Mill Battlefield. He bought the property for the timber, but trying to cut several large witness hickory trees, he ruined saws hitting cannon balls and projectiles. He sold the property for 50 cents an acre to the state of Georgia, it was the last untouched civil war Battlefield in the state. The 6,000 acres was sold for the intention to be a park. Unfortunately corrupt government officials sold the property to housing developers and only 4 acres remained for the park. My father told me stories of picking up miniballs that washed down the steep hills into the creek after hard rains. He found a unbroken 1836 US NCO sword on the Battlefield lost.

Sherman graduated 6th in West Point's 1840 class. Of the top five cadets, <br>only William Gilham (#5) saw Civil War service... with the Confederacy.

Used to hike up Pine Mountain often, excellent view of Cartersville from the top. The way up was not an established trail but the lack of underbrush made going easy. Enjoyed many hours of solitude on that mountain. Thanks for the video.

I had always heard Sherman was committed because the Army, after hearing him say out loud that he believed it would take X number of soldiers Y amount of time to secure and pacify the theater he was in charge of, and those estimates being wildly beyond the armies own estimates, had him committed because he MUST be crazy. And that at the end, he was mostly correct.
