Sarah Vaughan truly had the best voice in the business. It is said she could have sung operatically had she been so inclined and trained, her range was so great. In the 80s I first heard her perform in a Washington, DC Jazz Club ("Charlies of Georgetown") and told the doorkeeper, "I want to meet Miss Vaughan." He declined me once, then, upon my repeating my second, unmovable "demand" he called her out and she came. I had an out-of-body experience telling her how much I loved her, and she just sat there and giggled her childish laugh. I later heard her perform her Gershwin concert with Michael TIlson Thomas guest conducting the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in, of all places, Birmingham, Alabama. She rocked the house once again. I was driving through Atlanta listening to her sing on a jazz station when the announcer said, "Sarah Vaughan. Dead today...." I had to pull over and cry. What a darling she was. Such an irreplaceable talent. Thank you, Miss Vaughan.

Sassy is so under celebrated that it's almost criminal. She defies categorization and raises the bar through the roof on every note and phrase. Seemingly effortless mastery.

I love Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, and Aretha Franklin, all these women had iconic voices and were all different. There's no comparing them.
