  If you want a “taste” of what life was like when the French and English fought, allying with local tribes, watch the film “Last of the Mohicans.”  It is fiction, historical facts are rather loose, but it’s a beautifully shot film.  The opening credits in the Blue Ridge mountains is the best film opening I’ve ever seen.

  The French and Indian War was fought by Britain against France with Indians on both sides - in 1754-1763. A hundred years after the height of the Beaver Wars (1600-1700).

  The Algonquin occupied the Ottawa River watershed and included a number of groups such as the Kichesippirini, Weskarini, Kinouchepirini and others. I often drive over the island where the Kichesippirini had their main village at the time of Champlain. The Algonquin are still here in eastern Ontario and western Quebec. The history of this period is fascinating and living on the shores of the Ottawa River I often wonder what drama unfolded along these shores.

  This is a good overview to get you familiar with the names.  There is a lot, you need to just dive in.  Tribes always fought over territories.  This is over fur trading.  The French and Indian War didn't really 'start' yet...that is the war orior to the Revolution.

  It didn’t matter the colonizer or the tribe, the currency that all warred over was beaver territory to feed the demand in Europe.

  When I was a kid in school I read "Drums Along the Mohawk", and  "Northwest Passage", if you like to read novels.

  The tribal name pronunciations were a bit off in some cases. &nbsp; <br><br>The video hinted at the effect of disease. &nbsp;But populations and politics were in upheaval in Native America before Europeans began to settle and exploit resources in that area. &nbsp;For decades before settlement, there had been fishing and a small degree of slave taking off the coast of what would become New England and the Maritimes.<br><br>This spread waves of disease throughout the area. &nbsp;These were virgin field epidemics, with death rates over 80%. &nbsp;Entire areas were depopulated. &nbsp;Alliances which had kept things in balance dissolved. &nbsp;For some tribes, populations fell so far that they didn&apos;t have enough labor to maintain their traditional economies. &nbsp;In areas the situation was post-apocalyptic.<br><br>I&apos;m an Oglala, it is popular to depict our various peoples as tree hugging, peaceniks. &nbsp;But, we had our territories and our political goals. &nbsp;Like Europeans we fought to preserve and even expand our land bases. &nbsp;We lived in a complex environment of 500+ tribes, with individual visions for our children&apos;s future. &nbsp;It was never a land of peace, but the advent of European settlement made things far worse.
