  I am not a neophyte to rock and roll and music in general.  I have always been a Stones fan since the age of 12 - I am now almost 67.  I beg to differ on the statement the Exile was a critical success right off the bat.  Unless I am sadly mistaken, the album was widely panned by critics.  I liked it at first, but it took me a while to really appreciate it for the masterpiece it actually is.  If I recall the "critics" initially responded very poorly to the record, and it was only after a pretty significant period of time (like 5+ years at a minimum) that the album was fully appreciated for how good it really is.  There are LOTS of truly great Stones albums - Let it Bleed, Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers...  But in my opinion, Exile is their VERY best. Sometimes chaos produces true gold.  Just my opinion.

  Can’t overlook the many tracks on Exile with great piano by Nicky Hopkins, Rocks Off among them!

  Gram Parsons the Americana legend my dad’s band was Devils in Disguise took big inspiration from Gram. That picture of Keith and Gram was framed in my house growing up. I’d say my dad raised us right.

  I was 14 years old and read an article in Circus magazine about this album being recorded,I knew it was  going to be a double album so I did extra chores around the house to make money to buy this album when it came out, what a magical time to be a teenager with all the great music around

  For me, this was the easiest Stones period to romanticize.  Mansion in the south of France,  world on a string, come on!  I appreciate the effort the boys put in to keep the band together. They’ve given me a lot of pleasure. Thanks for the doc.

  Tremendous stuff this. Let it Loose is, for me, Mick’s greatest vocal performance so how weird to hear that there were unused lyrics!

  It’s funny the way Exile has somehow leapfrogged the holy trinity of Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers. Almost like music journalists collectively sighed, realised they’d squeezed every last adjective out of those three, and thought, “Right, time to rewrite history let’s pretend Exile on Main St. is the Second Coming.”<br><br>To me, it’s their last puff of air before a 40-year slide into beige. Classic double-album blues: the ’70s plague that set in once the marching powder arrived, the yes-men unpacked their suitcases, and the one person brave enough to say “lads… that’s rubbish” was shown the door.<br><br>Say what you like about Brian’s songwriting (or lack of it), but his presence brought a spark that had well and truly evaporated by ’72. The band kept rolling, but the magic took the first taxi home.
